Near-IR study of the impact of alkyl-ammonium and -phosphonium cations on the hydration of montmorillonite

Michal Slany et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of organic cations on the water adsorption capacity of montmorillonite. The samples were characterized using carbon analysis, N-2 adsorption, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of water decreased with increasing size of the organic cations. It was also found that montmorillonites saturated with alkylphosphonium cations exhibited higher hydrophobicity compared to those with alkylammonium cations.

Lake warming intensifies the seasonal pattern of internal nutrient cycling in the eutrophic lake and potential impacts on algal blooms

Tong Yindong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of lake warming on the internal nutrient cycling in eutrophic lakes using data from Lake Chaohu in China. It found that internal nutrient loading plays a key role in the seasonal variations of nutrient concentrations in the lake, and predicted that lake warming could lead to stronger seasonal fluctuations of internal loading, creating conditions for longer cyanobacteria blooms. These findings can help improve mitigation strategies for eutrophic lake restoration.

Benthic invaders control the phosphorus cycle in the world's largest freshwater ecosystem

Jiying Li et al.

Summary: The invasion of dreissenid (zebra and quagga) mussels in the Laurentian Great Lakes has significantly altered the ecology of these lakes, with quagga mussels now playing a key role in regulating the cycling of phosphorus. Their enormous biomass has led to large quantities of phosphorus being sequestered in their tissues, intensifying benthic phosphorus exchanges. This study highlights the significant impact that invasive species can have on geochemical cycles in aquatic ecosystems, with implications for water quality management.

Critical review on soil phosphorus migration and transformation under freezing-thawing cycles and typical regulatory measurements

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: The freezing-thawing period is crucial for soil nutrient cycling. Phosphorus, a key nutrient for crop growth, mainly comes from soil but with low utilization efficiency. Research shows that freezing-thawing affects soil structure, phosphorus migration, and transformation, while biochar and humic substances have positive effects on soil during this period.

Phosphorus removal from diluted wastewaters using a La/C nanocomposite-doped membrane with adsorption-filtration dual functions

Wen-Jing Xia et al.

Summary: This study proposed a composite membrane with dual functions of adsorption and filtration to remove phosphorus from wastewaters. The La/C material synthesized showed superior phosphorus adsorption capacity, and the composite membrane effectively removed particles and phosphorus from the diluted wastewaters. The work provides valuable information for the feasible application of phosphorus adsorption materials and enlightens the technical development for low phosphorus polluted wastewater remediation.

NOx removal with efficient recycling of NO2 from iron-ore sintering flue gas: A novel cyclic adsorption process

Yingshu Liu et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel cyclic adsorption process for NOx removal with recycling of NO2 from iron-ore sintering flue gas, utilizing pelletized Na-ZSM-5 zeolites as sorbents. This process achieves a high NO2 recovery rate and enriched NO2 concentration, with stable adsorption-desorption performance for up to 16 cycles. The segmentation of hot gas circulations plays a key role in boosting NOx regenerability, providing an economical strategy for continuous NO2 production.

Enhanced hydraulic cleanability of biofilms developed under a low phosphorus concentration in reverse osmosis membrane systems

Luisa Javier et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the removal efficiency of biofilms grown under different phosphorus concentrations and found that biofilms grown at lower phosphorus concentration had better cleanability due to more soluble polymers in the EPS. The research confirms that manipulating the feed water nutrient composition can engineer a biofilm that is easier to remove.
