Mode I translaminar fracture toughness of high performance laminated biocomposites reinforced by sisal fibers: Accurate measurement approach and lay-up effects

Francesco Bongiorno et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzes the translaminar fracture behavior of high performance biocomposites made of green epoxy reinforced with sisal fibers. The research proposes a modified area method to accurately estimate fracture toughness, taking into account local damage and fiber bridging during crack propagation. The examined laminates exhibit relatively high fracture toughness, indicating their potential to replace composites with lower toughness as well as metals like steel, aluminum, and titanium.

New Concept in Bioderived Composites: Biochar as Toughening Agent for Improving Performances and Durability of Agave-Based Epoxy Biocomposites

Bernardo Zuccarello et al.

Summary: Biocomposites are increasingly used in the industry due to their good mechanical properties, lightweight, and low cost, but still face challenges in static strength and fatigue life in certain structural applications. This study proposes a method to improve mechanical properties by adding biochar to a green epoxy matrix reinforced by Agave sisalana fibers. Experimental tests showed that the addition of 2 wt % biochar significantly enhanced the fatigue life and static tensile strength of the biocomposite.

Influence of the anisotropy of sisal fibers on the mechanical properties of high performance unidirectional biocomposite lamina and micromechanical models

Bernardo Zuccarello et al.

Summary: The present study demonstrates the significant influence of the microstructure of sisal fibers on the mechanical performance of biocomposites, especially under transversal tensile, longitudinal compressive, and shear loading. The development of new micromechanical models shows promise in providing effective guidance for structural applications during the design stage.
