Flexural behavior of functionally graded polymeric composite beams

M. Atta et al.

Summary: The bending test of functionally graded polymeric composite materials is investigated both experimentally and numerically, showing that the gradient pattern and V-f% of the outer layers are critical for improving flexural behavior. Delamination failure between layers plays a major role in the rapidity of final failure.

Recent advances in tribological behavior of functionally graded composites: A review

R. Jojith et al.

Summary: This article reviews the tribological performance of functionally graded composites (FGCs) under abrasive and reciprocating test conditions, based on numerous studies conducted over the past three decades. The findings reveal that FGCs exhibit different wear analysis trends under varying process conditions and parameters. A framework is presented for identifying the process parameters and evaluating wear performance through wear modes and mechanisms. Optimizing the process parameters independently can reduce material loss in the tribo-system, catering to specific engineering applications in accordance with industrial demands. Additionally, the challenges encountered during wear analysis are discussed, and their prospects in various scientific and technological fields are addressed.

Small punch testing of heat resistant ultrafine-grained Al composites stabilized by nano-metric Al2O3 (HITEMAL (c)) in a broad temperature range

Peter Krizik et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of thermally stable ultrafine-grained Al metal matrix composites dispersion strengthened and stabilized by nano-metric in-situ Al2O3 were tested by small punch testing (SPT) across a range of temperatures. The microstructural features of the materials had a significant impact on their mechanical properties and the correlation between SPT and conventional tensile testing results varied with testing temperature. Fracture mechanisms were found to change from ductile to brittle behavior as testing temperature increased.

Investigation on integrity assessment tests of WRB metal-polymer-metal composites

Saeed Mousa et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of manufacturing parameters, interface properties, and layer thicknesses on the strength and integrity of Al-PU-Al composites fabricated using warm roll bonding technique. Experimental and numerical results revealed that there is a critical diameter of unbonded circle that significantly affects the interlayer bonding strength. The mechanical behavior of the composites from small punch test is marginally influenced by the interfacial bonding strength.

Mechanics of the small punch test: a review and qualification of additive manufacturing materials

Jonathan Torres et al.

Summary: The Small Punch Test (SPT) was developed for evaluating materials in situations where the source material is scarce, lacking standardization, yet verified using traditional testing methods. Various methods exist to equate SPT results with conventional stress-strain data, but weaknesses such as fracture and fatigue approaches exist. Further research is focused on evaluating the suitability of SPT for additively manufactured (AM) materials and developing correlation equations between SPT results and conventional testing data for expediting material studies and optimization.

Comparative Study between Small Punch Tests and Finite Element Analysis of Miniature Steel Specimens

Zhaoyi Cheng et al.

Summary: The small punch test method using miniature specimens has great potential for material research in extreme environments, providing a new way to establish mechanical properties and obtain accurate data from miniature specimens. Through SPT experiments, FEM analyses, and scanning electron microscopy observations, a method for deriving mechanical properties from standard tensile test samples has been established.

Islam El-Sagheer et al.

Summary: The study aims to predict the fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced polymer by proposing matrix cracked specimens to address the limitations of existing standards. Results show significant differences in fracture behavior and toughness between different cracked specimens, with the fracture toughness of matrix cracked specimens with two layers being 1.3 times higher than that of specimens with one layer.
