Thermal oxidation of cross-linked PE and EPR used as insulation materials: Multi-scale correlation over a wide range of temperatures

Camille Blivet et al.

Summary: The study investigated the thermo-oxidation of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and cross-linked ethylene propylene rubber (XLEPR) used as electrical insulators in cable systems. Characterisation of the aged materials and calculation of activation energies were conducted, showing correlations between oxidation products, crystallinity changes, gel content variations, and mechanical property reductions in both materials. Despite a diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) effect observed in the 1 mm thick samples, the results were consistent.

Physico-chemical analysis of a silane-grafted polyethylene stabilised with an excess of Irganox 1076®. Proposal of a microstructural model

Anne Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that antioxidant crystals in this polymer are mainly present on the surface rather than in the interior, and they participate in stabilizing the polymer matrix during oxidation. Surface cleaning effectively removes antioxidant crystals on the surface. The research results propose a simplified microstructural model for this heterogeneously stabilized polymer.

A new analytical model for predicting the radio-thermal oxidation kinetics and the lifetime of electric cable insulation in nuclear power plants. application to silane cross-linked polyethylene

Sarah Hettal et al.

Summary: The radio-thermal oxidation of silane cross-linked polyethylene (Si-XLPE) was studied under different dose rates and temperatures, leading to the build-up of various carbonyl and hydroxyl products and chain scission. A new analytical model was developed to predict the auto-acceleration of oxidation kinetics, providing a more direct assessment of the lifetime of Si-XLPE in different environments.

Towards a Kinetic Modeling of the Changes in the Electrical Properties of Cable Insulation during Radio-Thermal Ageing in Nuclear Power Plants. Application to Silane-Crosslinked Polyethylene

Sarah Hettal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the radio-thermal ageing of silane-crosslinked polyethylene, revealing ketones as the main oxidation products. An analytical kinetic model was developed to predict density increase and adverse changes in electrical properties, resulting in a lifetime extension of at least two times compared to conventional methods.

Thermal ageing of a silane-crosslinked polyethylene stabilised with an excess of Irganox 1076®

Anne Xu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the thermal ageing of silane-crosslinked polyethylene stabilised with an excess of phenolic antioxidant in the temperature range between 87°C and 130°C. The research shows that the antioxidant excess efficiently participates in polymer stabilisation during thermal ageing, mainly due to the physical loss of the antioxidants through evaporation. Additionally, the study found that the initial antioxidant depletion was essentially caused by physical loss rather than chemical consumption.
