Projecting the likely importance of weak-interaction-driven bulk viscosity in neutron star mergers

Elias R. Most et al.

Summary: The study shows that bulk viscosity driven by Urca processes can affect the gravitational wave signal of a neutron star coalescence, especially in the post-merger phase. It was found that bulk viscosity could potentially have significant effects on the global dynamics of the merger scenario.

Thermodynamic Stability Implies Causality

L. Gavassino et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between the stability conditions of a relativistic hydrodynamic theory and the maximization of entropy in equilibrium. Using a simple geometrical argument, it is proven that in a stable theory, localized perturbations cannot propagate outside their future light cone. This implies that acausal theories in relativistic hydrodynamics must be thermodynamically unstable, at least near equilibrium. The study reveals a deep connection between stability and causality, which arises from the relationship between entropy and information.

Linearizing a non-linear formulation for general relativistic dissipative fluids

T. Celora et al.

Summary: A method for obtaining fully non-linear equations of motion for dissipative general relativistic multi-fluids is introduced, involving the explicit use of lower dimensional matter spaces. The goal is to compare these action-based results with more traditional methods, such as the Muller-Israel-Stewart model. By constructing self-consistent notions of equilibrium and developing first-order deviations on matter spaces, the dissipation terms of the action-based model are identified with first-order thermodynamical fluxes. This general framework can be applied to multi-fluid systems without available causal and stable models.

Bulk viscosity in relativistic fluids: from thermodynamics to hydrodynamics

L. Gavassino et al.

Summary: This article introduces the extended irreversible thermodynamics approach of promoting dissipative fluxes to non-equilibrium thermodynamic variables, focusing on the successful application of the Israel-Stewart theory in relativistic dissipation. By changing variables, an equivalent reformulation of the equations in terms of bulk viscosity is provided, mapping thermodynamic processes contributing to bulk viscosity into chemical reactions. Concrete examples demonstrate new ways of computing bulk viscosity and constructing the Israel-Stewart model for a generic bulk-viscous fluid.

Nonlinear Constraints on Relativistic Fluids Far from Equilibrium

Fabio S. Bemfica et al.

Summary: New constraints have been identified for Israel-Stewart-like theories of fluid dynamics to be causal far from equilibrium. Sufficient conditions have also been presented to ensure causality, local existence, and uniqueness of solutions in these theories. The findings provide fundamental constraints on the magnitude of viscous corrections in fluid dynamics far from equilibrium, without simplifying symmetry or near-equilibrium assumptions.

Transient fluid dynamics with general matching conditions: A first study from the method of moments

Gabriel S. Rocha et al.

Summary: Matching conditions are crucial in determining the overall consistency properties of relativistic fluid dynamics. This paper derives transient fluid dynamics from kinetic theory without imposing a specific matching condition, and then examines how the choice of matching condition affects the equations of motion and transport coefficients.

Dissipative magnetohydrodynamics for nonresistive relativistic plasmas: An implicit second-order flux-conservative formulation with stiff relaxation

Elias R. Most et al.

Summary: This study presents a new numerical scheme for nonresistive relativistic viscous plasmas, capable of handling dissipative effects and anisotropies induced by magnetic fields. By solving an extended system for dissipative quantities and transforming them into flux-divergence form, traditional shock capturing methods can be applied for numerical study of highly turbulent flows. The 14-moment closure allows seamless interpolation between highly collisional and highly anisotropic limits, making it useful for a broad class of relativistic magnetized flows.

Hydrodynamic gradient expansion in linear response theory

Michal P. Heller et al.

Summary: This study examines the properties of the hydrodynamic gradient expansion in relativistic fluid mechanics, focusing on its divergence for a broad class of microscopic theories in the linear regime. The critical momentum determining whether the expansion converges or diverges is an intrinsic property set by branch point singularities of hydrodynamic dispersion relations. The results do not rely on highly symmetric fluid flows used in previous studies of heavy-ion collisions and cosmology.

LOCAL WELL-POSEDNESS IN SOBOLEV SPACES FOR FIRST-ORDER BAROTROPIC CAUSAL RELATIVISTIC VISCOUS HYDRODYNAMICS

Fabio S. Bemfica et al.

Summary: We study the theory of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics, which offers a causal and stable first-order theory of relativistic fluids with viscosity in the case of barotropic fluids. The local well-posedness of its equations of motion has been previously established in Gevrey spaces, and this study improves this result by proving local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces.

Nonexistence and existence of shock profiles in the Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha model

Heinrich Freistuehler

Summary: This paper studies a four-field hyperbolic PDE model for the pure radiation fluid with viscosity, and shows that there is a dichotomy in the profiles of shock waves for certain choices of parameters. It is found that for specific boundary conditions, all shock waves may have profiles, indicating a different behavior compared to the interior choices of parameters.

Numerical exploration of first-order relativistic hydrodynamics

Alex Pandya et al.

Summary: The first numerical solutions of the causal, stable relativistic Navier-Stokes equations formulated by BDNK are presented for conformal fluid in Minkowski spacetime. Comparisons are made with solutions obtained using the MIS formalism, showing good agreement for low viscosity but differences in regions with large gradients at high viscosity. The transient violation of weak energy condition in BDNK solutions converges towards a hydrodynamic regime, resembling an approach to a universal attractor. Smooth resolution of arbitrarily strong shockwaves is achieved when employing a hydrodynamic frame with maximum characteristic speed of the BDNK system as the speed of light or higher. Uncertainty remains regarding the well-posedness of discontinuous initial data for the BDNK system, particularly in the shock tube problem.

Exploring theoretical uncertainties in the hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Cheng Chiu et al.

Summary: The study explores theoretical uncertainties in the hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions by examining the full nonlinear causality conditions and quantifying the role of second-order transport coefficients in flow observables. The causality conditions impose physical constraints on the maximum allowed values of inverse Reynolds numbers during the hydrodynamic evolution. While flow observables variations in Au+Au collisions are small with and without imposing causality conditions, significant sensitivity is observed in small p+Au collisions, posing challenges for studying the collectivity of small systems.

Summary: A simple model was used to study nonlinear phenomena in a real relativistic fluid, focusing on new types of behavior without nonrelativistic equivalents, such as an entropy cascade driven by fluctuations in the theory's tensor degrees of freedom. Strangeness-changing rates and hyperonic bulk viscosity in neutron star mergers

Mark G. Alford et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the computation of rates of strangeness-changing processes and the resultant bulk viscosity in matter at densities and temperatures typical of neutron star mergers, including processes where quarks move between baryons via meson exchange, which provide the dominant contribution to these rates. The study finds that hyperon bulk viscosity can probably be neglected at temperatures in the MeV regime but becomes highly relevant for keV-range temperatures.
