Time-Rescaling of Dirac Dynamics: Shortcuts to Adiabaticity in Ion Traps and Weyl Semimetals

Agniva Roychowdhury et al.

Summary: Time-rescaling is a method to achieve adiabatic dynamics in fast processes without relying on the eigenspectrum and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. However, it requires the original dynamics to be adiabatic and results in non-trivial time-dependence of the Hamiltonian in the rescaled time frame. This technique can be applied to Dirac dynamics, absorbing all time-dependence into effective potentials using a carefully chosen unitary transformation, as demonstrated in ion traps and for the adiabatic creation of Weyl points.

Variational design principles for nonequilibrium colloidal assembly

Avishek Das et al.

Summary: By utilizing large deviation theory and principles of stochastic optimal control, optimal forces for targeted self-assembly within nonequilibrium steady-states can be determined to enhance the stability of the target structure. Tunable complexity of specific short-range interactions allows for high yield assembly of colloidal clusters, with shear flow affecting the yield differently based on the rigidity of the clusters. The influence of shear on yield enhancement or suppression is rationalized through a generalized linear response theory, with basic design principles for targeted assembly out of equilibrium uncovered through the study of unique clusters.

Environment-Assisted Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Akram Touil et al.

Summary: Researchers propose a novel method for shortcuts to adiabaticity by controlling the environment to enable system evolution through the adiabatic manifold, successfully constructing a unique form of driving on the environment applicable to composite states of arbitrary dimension, and comparing the cost with counterdiabatic driving technique. This is illustrated using a two-qubit model.

Dissipation bounds the amplification of transition rates far from equilibrium

Benjamin Kuznets-Speck et al.

Summary: Complex systems have the ability to regulate the transition speed between different long-lived states by converting energy from nonequilibrium forces, but currently there is no general framework to relate the enhancement of transition rate to energy dissipation. Recent advances in stochastic thermodynamics have provided a framework that allows for a deeper understanding of transitions far from equilibrium, revealing a basic speed limit that relates heat dissipation to achievable rate amplification. This speed limit is shown to tightly constrain the rate enhancement in various examples of barrier crossings in systems driven by autonomous and deterministic external forces.

Optimality of nonconservative driving for finite-time processes with discrete states

Summary: The study shows that for a system with discrete states, achieving an optimal driving process involves nonconservative driving, unlike in systems with continuous states. In a multicyclic network, the optimal driving affinity is limited by the number of states within each cycle.
