An Ensemble-Based Eddy and Spectral Analysis, With Application to the Gulf Stream

Takaya Uchida et al.

Summary: This study presents a generalization for analyzing eddy energy using ensembles, addressing the definition of an eddy and the computation of energy spectra. The results show anisotropic spectra in the North Atlantic Gulf Stream and faster spectral slopes compared to the expected slope from quasi-geostrophic theory.

Deterministic Model of the Eddy Dynamics for a Midlatitude Ocean Model

Takaya Uchida et al.

Summary: Mesoscale eddies play an important role in shaping the mean stratification, but their feedback onto the mean flow is weaker in mesoscale-permitting simulations. In this study, a deterministic closure is formulated to reproduce the spatial patterns and magnitude of eddy kinetic and potential energy. Nonlocal eddy feedbacks onto the mean flow are also considered by solving the subgrid eddy potential vorticity equation.

On the Upper-Ocean Vertical Eddy Heat Transport in the Kuroshio Extension. Part I: Variability and Dynamics

Peiran Yang et al.

Summary: Oceanic eddies play a crucial role in transferring heat from the subsurface to the surface ocean. This study simulated the winter heat transport Q(T) in the Kuroshio Extension and derived an omega equation to decompose the contribution of Q(T) from different dynamics. It was found that geostrophic deformation and vertical mixing of momentum are the major processes generating Q(T) in the mixed layer.

On Wind-Driven Energetics of Subtropical Gyres

Q. Jamet et al.

Summary: The flow of energy in wind-driven circulation is examined through a combination of theoretical and numerical studies. The analysis shows that the primary sink of wind input into the mean circulation is in the separated jet, and not the interior. Wind energy input is much smaller than interior energy fluxes, indicating that the general circulation largely recirculates energy.

On the Importance of High-Resolution in Large-Scale Ocean Models

Eric P. Chassignet et al.

Summary: Eddy-resolving global ocean models are commonly used for ocean prediction, and the improvement of resolution in representing observed ocean variability and western boundary currents is being evaluated in climate models. Higher resolution, including submesoscale features, high-resolution bathymetry, and tides, significantly enhances the models' abilities to capture ocean variability, but at a substantial computational cost. Close collaboration with computer scientists is essential for these simulations to become routine and fully utilize the latest computing architecture.

Stochastic-Deep Learning Parameterization of Ocean Momentum Forcing

Arthur P. Guillaumin et al.

Summary: The study presents a stochastic Deep Learning parameterization trained on CM2.6 data, predicting both the mean and standard deviation of subgrid momentum forcing to form a Gaussian distribution, demonstrating potential for stochastic subgrid parameterization. Offline tests show the parameterization generalizes well and improves flow statistics in global oceans and changing climate conditions.

The Seasonal Variability of the Ocean Energy Cycle from a Quasi-Geostrophic Double Gyre Ensemble

Summary: The seasonality of mesoscale eddies with kinetic energies peaking in summer is attributed to the separated jet shedding stronger mesoscale eddies during stabilized Western Boundary Current in summer, rather than the traditional inverse energy cascade mechanism.
