Is urban green space associated with lower mental healthcare expenditure?

Thomas Astell-Burt et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between green space and mental health as well as healthcare expenditure in three Australian cities. The analysis reveals that an increase in green space is associated with higher rates of antidepressant prescribing, but not with referrals for talking therapy. The presence of open grass is positively associated with antidepressant prescriptions and negatively associated with talking therapy referrals. These findings raise questions about the effectiveness of greening strategies in reducing mental healthcare expenditure.
