Association between WASH-Related Behaviors and Knowledge with Childhood Diarrhea in Tanzania

Summary: This study revealed a high prevalence of childhood diarrhea morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa, with maternal age, wealth index, maternal education, maternal occupation, age of child, time of initiation of breast feeding, and time to get water source significantly associated with diarrhea. Intervention through health education and promotion for mothers/caretakers who are poor, less educated, and young should be implemented to prevent diarrhea in the region.

Associations Between Improved Water Supply and Sanitation Usage and Childhood Diarrhea in Ethiopia: An Analysis of the 2016 Demographic and Health Survey

Summary: In Ethiopia, residing in the Somali region, having more than 2 children under the age of 5, having more than 5 household members, indexed child sex, and safe disposal of child feces were significantly associated with childhood diarrhea. Therefore, efforts to prevent childhood diarrhea in Ethiopia should focus on reducing household crowding and promoting safe disposal of child feces.

Handwashing effect on diarrheal incidence in children under 5 years old in rural eastern Ethiopia: a cluster randomized controlled trial

Summary: The study aimed to assess the efficiency of handwashing in reducing diarrheal disease in children under 5 years old in rural kebeles of Dire Dawa, east Ethiopia. Results showed a significant 41% reduction in diarrheal incidence in the intervention arm where handwashing with soap complemented with hand hygiene promotion was implemented.
