Firm productivity and government contracts: The moderating role of corruption

Ferran Vendrell-Herrero et al.

Summary: This research explores the connection between firm productivity, perceived corruption, and the likelihood of obtaining government contracts in public procurement. The findings indicate that firm productivity is the main factor in awarding government contracts in the absence of corruption. However, in corrupt environments, productive firms are excluded from bidding, favoring domestic-market oriented firms. The study suggests that opening bidding processes to exporting firms can result in smarter public procurement decisions, as these firms are found to pay less bribes and engage in fewer informal acts compared to domestic-market oriented firms.

Politically connected firms and privileged access to credit: Evidence from Central and Eastern Europe

Maurizio Bussolo et al.

Summary: This study uses firm-level data from six Central and Eastern European economies to examine the impact of political connections on firms' financial constraints. The results show that politically connected firms have higher leverage, lower profitability, and lower productivity of capital compared to unconnected firms. However, there is no significant difference in investment rates between the two groups. Politically connected firms, despite being less productive, borrow more due to easier access to credit. These findings suggest that political connections can distort capital allocation and have potential welfare costs.

Innovation agglomeration and urban hierarchy: evidence from Chinese cities

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: Innovation agglomeration leads to changes in the hierarchical structure of innovation, driving regional economic development. We establish a general equilibrium framework for urban innovation, and empirically analyze 286 prefecture level Chinese cities to evaluate the impact of urban tier on innovation agglomeration. The main results show that the spatial structure of innovation in Chinese cities is consistent with the urban tier, and the impact of city scale on innovation agglomeration is nonlinear, with the higher agglomeration of innovation resources in high-tier cities.

Do opinion polls move stock prices? Evidence from the US presidential election in 2016

Michael Herold et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes stock returns before and during the 2016 US presidential election, exploring the relationship between polling data and stock prices. It introduces the Trump Head-to-Head Momentum (THHM) to measure the impact of polling data on stock prices, finding significant relation with industries representing about 30% of the market capitalization. The study suggests that active trading strategies based on THHM outperform passive strategies after the election, indicating that stock prices have been affected by changes in the probability of Trump winning the election during the pre-election period.
