Biomonitoring of metallic air pollutants in unique habitations of the Brahmaputra Valley using moss species-Atrichum angustatum: spatiotemporal deposition patterns and sources

Sharfaa HussainnAff et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioaccumulation of metals by the moss species Atrichum angustatum in the Brahmaputra valley, India. The findings suggest that the valley is mostly contaminated by Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Pb, posing a maximum ecological risk. The study also indicates that A. angustatum can serve as a potential biomonitor for metallic pollutants.

Mental health consequences of urban air pollution: prospective population-based longitudinal survey

Ioannis Bakolis et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a link between long-term exposure to air pollution and poor mental health, particularly related to atmospheric particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. Research indicates that traffic-related air pollution has a negative impact on mental health, and improving air quality could reduce the burden of mental disorders.

Studying the influence of seasonal conditions and period of exposure on trace element concentrations in the moss-transplant Pylaisia polyantha

Natalia Rogova et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of seasonal conditions and exposure periods on trace element concentrations in Pylaisia polyantha moss transplanted to urban areas. The research found that seasonal conditions did not affect the vital activity of the transplanted moss, and the most significant increase in trace element concentration occurred within one month. The study demonstrated the high sensitivity of the moss to technogenic load levels, suggesting its potential for future research with similar goals.

How can vegetation protect us from air pollution? A critical review on green spaces' mitigation abilities for air-borne particles from a public health perspective-with implications for urban planning

Arnt Diener et al.

Summary: Air pollution leads to the highest mortality rate among global environmental risks, with vegetation and green spaces showing promising effects in reducing air-borne pollutants, particularly particulate matter (PM). However, guidance on utilizing green spaces for air quality control remains limited, highlighting the need for further research and integration of efforts in developing effective interventions.

The influence of environmental conditions on the lifespan of mosses under long-term active biomonitoring

Pawel Swislowski et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the physiological condition of Pleurozium schreberi moss species exposed continuously for a year and investigated the effect of exposure time on metal absorption by the moss. It was found that despite long-term exposure to environmental factors and a decrease in chlorophyll content, the moss still exhibited living organism characteristics and can be utilized for long-term environmental monitoring.

Quantitative analysis of fine dust particles on moss surfaces under laboratory conditions using the example of Brachythecium rutabulum

Bilitis Desiree Vanicela et al.

Summary: The study identified a model organism for investigating fine dust deposits on moss leaflets using an optical method with SEM for quantitative detection. Selection criteria were developed to identify additional moss species, allowing for quantification of fine dust particles on moss surfaces. Among five moss species examined, B. rutabulum was determined to be the most suitable model organism. Fine dust particles on the moss surface were counted and documented during 4 weeks of cultivation, with a significant decrease in particles of the size range 2.4 μm to 0.3 μm observed under laboratory conditions.

Summary: Photosynthetic activity is a key metabolic process that can be studied easily in the field to understand environmental factors affecting ecosystem balance. The study revealed that the photosynthetic activity of cryptogams depends on species, season, time of the day, and water availability. Photosynthetic activity increased from spring to autumn, with differences in activity observed between species and time of sample collection.

Air Quality during New Year's Eve: A Biomonitoring Study with Moss

Pawel Swislowski et al.

Summary: Mosses are valuable bioindicators for assessing atmospheric aerosol pollution by heavy metals, allowing for short- and long-term air quality monitoring. The study found that fireworks during New Year's Eve increase air pollution with heavy metals, while COVID-19 restrictions led to a reduction in atmospheric aerosol pollution.
