The relationship between sarcopenia and central hemodynamics in older adults with falls: a cross-sectional study

Hande Selvi Oztorun et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is associated with changes in central and peripheral blood pressure in patients with falls. Arterial stiffness is higher in sarcopenic patients, while other cardiac risk markers are lower. Sarcopenia is correlated with gait speed, Katz score, and hand grip strength.

Sarcopenia as a comorbidity of cardiovascular disease

Ken-ichiro Sasaki et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, characterized by lowered skeletal muscle mass, weakened skeletal muscle strength, and reduced physical performance, is associated with frailty and increased risk of falls and mortality. In patients with cardiovascular disease, multiple factors including systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and physical inactivity may contribute to CVD-related sarcopenia. Early diagnosis and prevention of CVD-related sarcopenia are necessary, and biomarkers such as atrial stiffness, coronary artery calcification score, and serum vitamin D levels may be helpful in identifying sarcopenia. Aerobic and resistance training exercises are recognized as effective strategies for preventing and treating sarcopenia.

Pathogenesis of sarcopenia and the relationship with fat mass: descriptive review

Chun-wei Li et al.

Summary: Age-associated obesity and muscle atrophy are closely linked and regulated by adipose tissue and skeletal muscle dysfunction. Adipose inflammation leads to fat redistribution and fatty infiltrations in muscles, causing decreased strength and functionality. Lipid accumulation induces mitochondrial dysfunction, increased production of reactive oxygen species, leading to lipotoxicity and insulin resistance. Muscle-secreted cytokines may exacerbate adipose tissue atrophy and chronic inflammation, establishing a vicious cycle of local hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation, promoting the development of sarcopenic obesity.

The Association Between Diabetes Mellitus and Risk of Sarcopenia: Accumulated Evidences From Observational Studies

Yu-Shun Qiao et al.

Summary: High HbA1c levels, prediabetes, diabetes, and diabetic complications are associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia. People with diabetes have a higher risk of sarcopenia, and therapeutic strategies should focus on preventing the conversion of IGT to diabetes and optimizing glycemic control to prevent or slow down sarcopenia in the diabetic population.

Correlation between Sarcopenia and Arteriosclerosis in Elderly Community Dwellers: A Multicenter Study

T. Sun et al.

Summary: The study of 2511 elderly subjects found a positive correlation between sarcopenia and arteriosclerosis, with a higher prevalence of sarcopenia in subjects with high baPWV. Additionally, HGS was negatively correlated with baPWV. These findings suggest potential shared pathophysiological mechanisms between arteriosclerosis and sarcopenia, with implications for future interventions.

Relationship Between Sarcopenia and Cardiovascular Diseases in the Elderly: An Overview

Nana He et al.

Summary: With the global aging population, aging-related diseases have become a challenge for governments across the world. Sarcopenia, defined as age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, function, and physical performance, is common in elderly patients with chronic diseases and may play a crucial role in the pathophysiology and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and mechanisms of sarcopenia and cardiovascular diseases in the elderly, which could lead to potential interventions for improved clinical outcomes.

Vascular endothelial dysfunction may be an early predictor of physical frailty and sarcopenia: A meta-analysis of available data from observational studies

Anjalee Thanuja Amarasekera et al.

Summary: The relationship between vascular endothelial dysfunction (VED) and physical frailty and sarcopenia (PF & S) was examined in five studies with high heterogeneity observed between studies. The lack of standardized operational definitions for frailty and sarcopenia was identified as a limiting factor in understanding the effects of VED on these conditions.

Inflammation is also considered a significant factor in this association.
