Delays in routine childhood vaccinations and their relationship with parental vaccine hesitancy: a cross-sectional study in Wuxi, China

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the Expanded Program on Immunization in China has achieved over 95% coverage, but over 50% of planned vaccinations were delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy was not associated with vaccination delay, but parents' convenience and satisfaction with immunization clinics were negatively correlated with children's vaccination delays.

Association of the COVID-19 Pandemic With Routine Childhood Vaccination Rates and Proportion Up to Date With Vaccinations Across 8 US Health Systems in the Vaccine Safety Datalink

Malini B. DeSilva et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to lower childhood vaccination rates in the US, with lower vaccination coverage for age groups of 7 months, 18 months, and 13 years, as well as variations by race and ethnicity. Targeted interventions are needed to increase routine childhood vaccination in undervaccinated communities.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine childhood immunisation in Colombia

Jose Moreno-Montoya et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine childhood vaccination coverage in Colombia, showing an overall decline of approximately 14.4% from 2019 to 2020. Different age groups, rural/urban areas, and vaccine types experienced varying degrees of reduction in vaccination coverage. The findings suggest the need for continued monitoring of immunization program coverage and catch-up vaccination activities to prevent vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks during the pandemic.

Impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic on Invasive Pneumococcal Disease and Risk of Pneumococcal Coinfection With Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2): Prospective National Cohort Study, England

Zahin Amin-Chowdhury et al.

Summary: According to research data from England, there was a significant decrease in the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) after the COVID-19 lockdown. Coinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and IPD, while rare, was associated with high case-fatality rates, particularly among older adults. The study findings do not support broader extension of pneumococcal vaccination due to the rarity, age and serotype distribution of IPD/COVID-19 coinfections.

Infodemics: A new challenge for public health

Sylvie C. Briand et al.

Summary: The infodemic of COVID-19 highlights how unlimited access to information can confuse and influence behaviors during a health emergency, but there is still little known about their relationship with epidemic management. To enhance preparedness for future health crises, it is necessary to propose new research directions.

The Risk of Resurgence in Vaccine-Preventable Infections Due to Coronavirus Disease 2019-Related Gaps in Immunization

Amy G. Feldman et al.

Summary: Globally, vaccination delivery has been significantly reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, posing a risk for potential resurgence of vaccine-preventable infections. Despite efforts by healthcare providers to mitigate risks, childhood vaccination rates remain below pre-pandemic levels. Collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, community leaders, and public health departments are needed to restore vaccination services.

Prevention of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Among Older Adults Receiving Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Suggests Interactions Between Streptococcus pneumoniae and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 in the Respiratory Tract

Joseph A. Lewnard et al.

Summary: After adjusting for risk factors and other exposures, adults aged >= 65 years who received 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) experienced lower incidence of COVID-19 diagnosis, hospitalization, and death. Antibiotic receipt transiently attenuated the association between PCV13 receipt and COVID-19 diagnosis.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the utilization of routine immunization services in Lebanon

Ziad Mansour et al.

Summary: The study found that the utilization of vaccination services at the national level in Lebanon decreased by 31% following the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 46.9% reduction in the private sector mainly between February and April 2020. In the public sector, the number of vaccine doses administered decreased by 20%, with the most prominent reductions observed between October 2019 and March 2020. Public health interventions are necessary to prevent future outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Missed childhood immunizations during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil: Analyses of routine statistics and of a national household survey

Mariangela F. Silveira et al.

Summary: Research shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a 20% reduction in childhood vaccination coverage in Brazil, with 20% of children missing vaccinations. Missed doses were most common in the Amazon region and among children from poor families. There is an urgent need to enhance immunization activities to make up for missed doses and reduce geographic and socioeconomic inequalities.

Childhood immunization during the COVID-19 pandemic in Texas

Tasmiah Nuzhath et al.

Summary: In 2020, Texas implemented COVID-19 social distancing guidelines to prevent surges in hospitals, inadvertently causing significant declines in childhood immunizations. The analysis of statewide data showed a 47% decline in immunization rates among 5-month-olds and a 58% decline among 16-month-olds. The concern is that continued declines in childhood immunization coverage could lead to co-endemics of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

Summary: The study showed that heterologous administration of a BNT162b2 boost in ChAdOx1-primed participants demonstrated robust immunogenicity and tolerable reactogenicity, along with stronger T cell responses. It suggests that heterologous vaccination is a viable strategy to combat COVID-19, but further research is needed to confirm its benefits and determine the optimal combinations, doses, and intervals.

Estimating global and regional disruptions to routine childhood vaccine coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020: a modelling study

Kate Causey et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on childhood routine immunisation globally in 2020, with millions of children missing doses of vaccines such as DTP3 and MCV1. While some regions show signs of recovery in vaccine coverage, efforts to strengthen immunisation data systems and reach children who missed routine vaccine doses during the pandemic will be crucial in accelerating progress towards higher and more equitable vaccination coverage in the coming years.
