An evapotranspiration deficit-based drought index to detect variability of terrestrial carbon productivity in the Middle East

Karam Alsafadi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variability of carbon productivity in the Middle East using the standardized evapotranspiration deficit index (SEDI). The findings show that croplands and grasslands in Syria, Iraq, and Turkey are more sensitive to the SEDI and are closely related to drought. The extreme drought in 2008 caused a significant decline in carbon productivity in northern Iraq and northeastern Syria, with long-lasting impacts on ecosystem restoration.

M. H. Afshar et al.

Summary: In this study, the consistency between meteorological and soil moisture drought indices was analyzed. The most consistent meteorological drought index with soil moisture drought index was identified as the best representative. The results showed that different meteorological drought indices have varying levels of correlation with soil moisture drought index in different climate and land use conditions. The K-Nearest Neighbor method was found to be the most effective in identifying the most correlated meteorological drought index with soil moisture drought index.

Evaluation of agricultural drought in South Korea using socio-economic drought information

Ji-Wan Lee et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the correlation between socioeconomic drought information (SEDI) based on Internet news articles and agricultural drought data, and to determine whether SEDI can provide reliable information regarding damage due to agricultural drought. The results show that SEDI has a significant correlation with agricultural statistical datasets, and it can detect drought one month earlier than the agricultural reservoir drought index (RDI). The findings suggest that our proposed method can contribute to the development of an impact-based early warning system for agricultural drought management.

Review of Meteorological Drought in Africa: Historical Trends, Impacts, Mitigation Measures, and Prospects

Brian Ayugi et al.

Summary: This review study examines the state of meteorological drought over Africa, focusing on historical trends, impacts, mitigation strategies, and future prospects. The study finds evidence of extreme drought events across the continent, mostly attributed to complex interactions of dynamical and thermodynamical mechanisms. The impact of drought is observed in the decline of agriculture, water resources, and environmental degradation. Future projections suggest a recovery from drought events in western/eastern Africa, while southern and northern regions show an increasing trend in drought characteristics. The study highlights the need for policy shifts to address the link between development and climate variability, and emphasizes the importance of efficient service delivery, strengthening of drought monitoring and early warning systems, and research on the combined effects of human activities and climate change.
