Assessing the pollution status, ecological and health risks of surface waters in Nnewi urban, Nigeria: implications of poor waste disposal

Ogechukwu O. Onyemesili et al.

Summary: It is important to evaluate the pollution status and associated risks of drinking water sources. The study focused on surface waters in Nnewi urban, Nigeria, which are polluted by municipal solid waste disposal. The results showed low pollution levels overall, but priority should be given to addressing lead contamination. The ecological and non-carcinogenic risks were found to be low, but chronic risks were higher for children due to ingestion. The probability of cancer risk was also found to be high due to lead ingestion, particularly for children. The water quality index indicated poor quality water in the majority of samples, making it unsuitable for drinking. Both natural and human factors were found to contribute to the presence of pollutants in the surface waters.

Potential health risk caused by heavy metal associated with seafood consumption around coastal area

Kumar Pandion et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal fluctuations in fish diversity and heavy metal concentrations in coastal areas, and assessed the human health risks associated with the heavy metals. The results showed significant variations in metal concentrations in fish, water, and sediment across different locations. The health hazard assessment indicated that the exposure doses of most elements were safe for both children and adults, except for Hg and Cd in children.

Geochemical distribution, statistical and health risk assessment of toxic elements in groundwater from a typical mining district in Nigeria

Monday T. Enyigwe et al.

Summary: The study found severe pollution of PTEs in groundwater samples from the Ameka mine area, posing serious health risks to human consumption. All samples were confirmed to be extremely polluted and unsuitable for drinking. Mining activities and rock-water interactions were identified as the main sources of elemental pollution in the groundwater system.

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGICAL RISK OF POTENTIALLY TOXIC ELEMENTS IN MAROS REGENCY, INDONESIA

Annisa Utami Rauf et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal levels and ecological risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in particulate matter (PM) samples collected from the Maros karst area in Indonesia. The findings suggest that PTEs concentrations are higher in the dry season, with severe accumulation near industrial activities and traffic roads. The study also identifies hotspots of PTEs in the East and Southeast area.

Health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements intake via food crops consumption: Monte Carlo simulation-based probabilistic and heavy metal pollution index

Fatemeh Sanaei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the content of heavy metals in consumed food crops and their potential health risks, revealing that local populations are facing potential health risks primarily related to arsenic, manganese, and molybdenum, with children being more vulnerable. The sensitivity analysis pointed to ingestion rate as the most influential factor contributing to the total risk, highlighting the need for strategies to reduce heavy metal exposure in food consumption.

Summary: This study investigated the groundwater quality in different regions of Tripura, India using statistical and graphical methods, finding that most samples were suitable for drinking but had heavy metal contamination. The research also indicated that children are more susceptible to chronic health risks, with higher risks during the pre-monsoon season.

Plasma Hsp90 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis and relation to lung and skin involvement: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

Hana Storkanova et al.

Summary: According to the study, plasma levels of Hsp90 are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to healthy controls, and are associated with increased inflammatory activity, worsened lung function, and extent of skin involvement in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. In patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease treated with cyclophosphamide, baseline Hsp90 levels can predict changes in DLCO over 12 months of therapy.

Annisa Utami Rauf et al.

Summary: Air quality deterioration is a major environmental issue in Indonesia. This study assessed potentially toxic elements (PTEs) levels and health risks in Maros Regency, finding high non-carcinogenic risk for children and cancer risk for both adults and children. As, Cr, and Pb were identified as the main contributors to cancer risk from PTE exposure.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.

Comparison of characteristics, water quality and health risk assessment of trace elements in surface water and groundwater in China

Shuangmei Tong et al.

Summary: The study compared the pollution status of surface water and groundwater in China for the first time, finding higher levels of trace elements, with arsenic being the predominant pollutant causing non-carcinogenic risk to human health. Children were more vulnerable to the adverse effects. High-risk sites were identified in specific river basins and regions, calling for more extensive monitoring in the future.
