Status of glaciers and climate change of East Karakoram in early twenty-first century

Summary: This study assesses the glacier change status in Shyok basin, East Karakoram, finding that most glaciers are stable but the percentage of retreating glaciers has increased since 2000. Climatic studies also indicate a warming trend and decreased snowfall in the region. Overall, there is no evidence of a Karakoram or climatic anomaly in the Eastern parts of Karakoram.

Summary: This study assessed changes in the Gya Glacier and reconstructed the 2014 outburst flood that struck Gya Village in Ladakh, India. The study also modeled a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) event in the region for the first time. Results show a 45.6% loss in glacier area between 1969 and 2019, with the proglacial lake expanding from 3.06 ha to 11 ha during the same period.

Summary: This study improves the accuracy of ice thickness estimation by utilizing precise DEM and glacier-specific model parameterization, indicating the potential consistency of this modeling approach for other glaciers. The calculated volume of glacier stored ice in 2017 was found to be 0.11198 +/- 0.0162 km³.
