Manipulating grading strategy for the efficient harvesting of industrial poplar plantations

Raffaele Spinelli et al.

Summary: This study explored the optimization potential of short rotation poplar plantations by manipulating log specifications and grading instructions to decrease time consumption or increase log yield. The experiment indicated that abandoning the manufacturing of a second small log was not cost-effective, but decreasing small end diameter efficiently increased log yield without negative effects on harvesting productivity.

Cost-effective Integrated Harvesting of Short-Rotation Poplar Plantations

Raffaele Spinelli et al.

Summary: The main challenge in designing a cost-effective harvesting system for European short-rotation plantations is the small tree size. This challenge is further complicated by the need for 4-meter logs for high-end products, ruling out whole-tree chipping. A simple system involving mechanical felling, tractor skidding, and excavator operation has been proven capable of maintaining harvesting costs below 17 euros per green ton, with limited capital investment and versatility for alternative jobs.

A Low-Investment Option for the Integrated Semi-mechanized Harvesting of Small-Scale, Short-Rotation Poplar Plantations

Raffaele Spinelli et al.

Summary: The industrial roundwood production has been successful in recent years, especially with the integrated production of logs and biomass in short rotation poplar plantations. Developing semi-mechanized harvesting systems based on low-cost machines has shown promising results in terms of productivity and cost-effectiveness. Further research on introducing simple technology to increase log yield is recommended for future studies.

Comparison of the Initial Growth of Different Poplar Clones on Four Sites in Western Slovakia-Preliminary Results

David Heilig et al.

Summary: This study evaluates four hybrid poplar comparison tests along a groundwater availability gradient in Western Slovakia. The results show that site factors significantly impact tree growth, with groundwater availability being a key factor in short rotation forestry.

Multi-tree cut-to-length harvesting of short-rotation poplar plantations

Natascia Magagnotti et al.

Summary: The study suggests that in European short-rotation plantations, using a multi-stem handling mode can increase harvesting productivity. The multi-stem handling system is capable of keeping harvesting costs below 15 euros per green ton, while meeting the requirements for value recovery and log quality specifications.

Biomass Allocation and Root Characteristics of Early-Stage Poplars (Populus spp.) for Assessing Their Water-Deficit Response During SRC Establishment

Matthias Meyer et al.

Summary: This study measured above- and belowground biomass fractionation, root diameter composition, and allocation of fine root length per total leaf area of Populus clones to assess the risk for plantation establishment during spring drought conditions. Some hybrid clones of Populus x euramericana showed plasticity in root biomass fractions, while clone Max 3 did not respond plastically to deficit watering.
