Improving TLS-based stem volume estimates by field measurements

Timo P. Pitkanen et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method that combines TLS technology with field measurements to improve the accuracy of stem volume prediction. By first fitting the stems using TLS data and then refining the results with field data, the approach achieved almost unbiased volumetric predictions with an RMSE of less than 5%, indicating the potential for considerably higher accuracy compared to using TLS data alone.

A new method to estimate branch biomass from terrestrial laser scanning data by bridging tree structure models

Man Hu et al.

Summary: The study presents a method called TSMtls to accurately estimate individual branch biomass by combining tree structure models and TLS data. The results showed promising accuracy and consistency on Scots pine trees, outperforming other TLS-based approaches.

Understanding 3D structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees with different management history

Ninni Saarinen et al.

Summary: This study utilized 3D information to assess the impact of forest management on the structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees, finding that thinning increased structural complexity. The study also identified a relationship between structural complexity and tree attributes.
