Evaluating Snow Bidirectional Reflectance of Models Using Multiangle Remote Sensing Data and Field Measurements

Lizao Ye et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of several snow bidirectional reflectance models and finds that the physical models perform better in capturing the characteristics of snow during rapid changes. Among them, the bic-GORT model achieves higher accuracy, while the ART model is simple and efficient.

Extending a Linear Kernel-Driven BRDF Model to Realistically Simulate Reflectance Anisotropy Over Rugged Terrain

Kai Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid algorithm called Topo-KD is proposed to address the issue of errors in surface bidirectional effects caused by rugged terrain. The algorithm adaptively selects the most suitable model (RLKB or LKBx005F;T) according to the terrain conditions and fitting residuals. The experiment using MODIS data sets demonstrates that the Topo-KD algorithm reduces fitting residuals in the red and NIR bands compared with the RTLSR model, indicating its better performance in mountainous areas.

A general framework of kernel-driven modeling in the thermal infrared domain

Biao Cao et al.

Summary: A new general framework of TIR kernel-driven modeling has been proposed in this study with four specific 4-parameter models, which have shown significant improvement in mimicking the patterns of the directional brightness temperature for both continuous and discrete vegetation canopies compared to the existing three-parameter models.

Modeling the radiation regime of a discontinuous canopy based on the stochastic radiative transport theory: Modification, evaluation and validation

Kai Yan et al.

Summary: Canopy radiative transfer (RT) modeling is critical for vegetation parameter retrieval. Stochastic radiative transfer (SRT) theory has been adapted for vegetation canopies, but its accuracy and validation need further improvement. This study proposes a new version of the SRT model, showing high efficiency and accuracy in describing the radiation regime of discontinuous canopies, with a newly proposed coupling scheme improving performance in hotspot regions. UAV observations validated the modeled canopy reflectance, providing a detailed theoretical basis for SRT model applications and improvements.

Performance stability of the MODIS and VIIRS LAI algorithms inferred from analysis of long time series of products

Kai Yan et al.

Summary: This research analyzed the quality of LAI products from MODIS and VIIRS over multiple years, finding consistency across different biome types and LAI values. While there was a significant increasing trend in LAI magnitudes during the 19-year MODIS period, product quality metrics remained stable. The study suggests that the retrieval algorithms for MODIS and VIIRS LAI products are robust and compatible with uncertainty levels of algorithm inputs.
