Regulation of the antennal transcriptome of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, during the first gonotrophic cycle

Sharon Rose Hill et al.

Summary: By using a comprehensive transcriptomic approach, the study sheds light on the regulation of odour-mediated host- and oviposition-seeking behaviours throughout the first gonotrophic cycle in female mosquitoes. Evidence shows that the age and state of the female mosquito have differential effects on antennal transcription. Patterns of differential transcript abundance of chemosensory and neuromodulatory genes appear to be linked to modulation by subsets of transcription factors across families.

Single-cell transcroptomes of developing and adult olfactory receptor neurons in Drosophila

Colleen N. McLaughlin et al.

Summary: By analyzing single-cell transcriptomes of Drosophila sensory neurons, researchers found that different neuron types maintain expression of the same olfactory receptors across development, and cell-type-specific transcriptomes are associated with axon trajectory choices in development and sensory modality in adults. Additionally, stage-specific genes were identified that could regulate the wiring and sensory responses of distinct neuron types.

Olfaction in Anopheles mosquitoes

Joanna K. Konopka et al.

Summary: Mosquitoes, especially the Anopheles species, are a global threat to human health as vectors of diseases such as malaria. Understanding Anopheles olfaction can help in reducing the spread of malaria, as these mosquitoes rely on their sense of smell for most of their behaviors. Various topics related to Anopheles olfaction are explored in this review, highlighting the importance of targeting mosquito olfaction in vector management strategies.

Metamorphic development of the olfactory system in the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum, Herbst)

Bjoern Trebels et al.

Summary: The study reveals that sensory neurons in the larval antennae of the red flour beetle are reused in the adult stage, while the structure of the antennal lobe undergoes transformation. The formation of adult glomeruli in the antennal lobe during mid-metamorphosis is a common feature among different insect species, although the role of Orco in development may vary.
