Relationship Between Added Sugar Intake and Sleep Quality Among University Students: A Cross-sectional Study

Sarah A. Alahmary et al.

Summary: The consumption of foods high in added sugar has been on the rise recently, which is expected to have a negative impact on health and life quality. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between added sugar intake and sleep quality among university students. The results showed a significant correlation between poor sleep quality and higher added sugar intake.

Snacking in Japanese nursery school children aged 3-6 years: its characteristics and contribution to overall dietary intake

Ryoko Tajima et al.

Summary: The study found that snacks contributed to 19.5% of total daily energy intake in Japanese nursery school children, with confectionaries being the largest contributor at 35.3%. While snacks were effective in meeting the requirements for calcium, iron, thiamine, and riboflavin, they were generally not nutrient-dense and could lead to excessive intake of certain nutrients.

Association between free sugar intake and nutrient dilution among Japanese children and adolescents: the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey, Japan

Aya Fujiwara et al.

Summary: The study found negative associations between free sugar intake and most micronutrients, with higher free sugar intake groups having lower intakes of micronutrients. Additionally, free sugar intake was positively associated with intakes of sugars and jams, fruit and vegetable juices, and soft drinks, and negatively associated with intakes of pulses and nuts and vegetables.

Association between sleep duration and sleep quality with sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages intake among university students

Behnoosh Boozari et al.

Summary: The study found that sleep duration was not associated with sugar or sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) intake in Iranian adults. Poor sleep quality was correlated with high consumption of SSBs, especially in younger and non-obese individuals. More prospective investigations are required to confirm these findings.

Dietary intakes, sources, and determinants of free sugars amongst Lebanese children and adolescents: findings from two national surveys

Lamis Jomaa et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high intake of free sugars among Lebanese children and adolescents, with females, higher income households, and parents with higher education levels associated with significantly lower odds of exceeding the WHO upper limit for free sugars intake. These findings emphasize the need for food system-based interventions to reduce free sugars intake in this vulnerable age group.

Exploration of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Approach in Synthesizing the Diet Quality of the Malaysian Population

Asma' Ali et al.

Summary: This study examined the dietary patterns of the Malaysian population using a posteriori method and principal component analysis (PCA), identifying six main patterns which explained 45.9% of the total variability. Positive associations were found between specific dietary patterns and nutrient intake, such as the traditional pattern with protein and sugar intake, prudent pattern with dietary fiber, and Chinese pattern with total energy. The exploration of the PCA approach demonstrated the importance of assessing dietary patterns for overall nutritional wellbeing and exploring diet-disease relationships.

Total and Free Sugar Levels and Main Types of Sugars Used in 18,784 Local and Imported Pre-Packaged Foods and Beverages Sold in Hong Kong

Lok Yin Chan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the free sugar content of pre-packaged foods in Hong Kong and found that over half of the products contained free sugar, with 'sugar (sucrose)' being the most frequently used free sugar ingredient. Fruit and vegetable juices had a higher median free sugar content than soft drinks, with free sugar contributing to nearly 70% of total sugar in most food groups.

Summary: Moderate adherence to HEI-2015 is associated with fasting blood glucose levels and the prevalence of MetS, but the relationship is not linear. Moderate adherence to this dietary pattern decreases the risk of developing MetS in women.
