Photoinduced Organocatalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (O-ATRP): Precision Polymer Synthesis Using Organic Photoredox Catalysis

Daniel A. Corbin et al.

Summary: The development of photoinduced organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) has attracted significant attention due to its ability to produce well-defined polymers under mild reaction conditions using organic photoredox catalysts. However, further investigation is needed to address the limitations of this method and expand its capabilities and applications.

Unravelling an oxygen-mediated reductive quenching pathway for photopolymerisation under long wavelengths

Chenyu Wu et al.

Summary: Photomediated-reversible-deactivation radical polymerisation has a limited choice of available photocatalysts due to strict property requirements. The authors propose an oxygen-mediated reductive quenching pathway for photoinduced electron transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerisation, enabling efficient polymerisation and broader spectrum coverage.

Summary: Carbon nanodots (CDs) from different biomass show varying activities in sensitizing photo-induced reactions, and also demonstrate efficiency in free radical polymerization processes. The time-resolved fluorescence measurements revealed the presence of multiple emitting species contributing to the reactivity of excited states.

Making ATRP More Practical: Oxygen Tolerance

Grzegorz Szczepaniak et al.

Summary: ATRP is a well-known technique for the controlled polymerization of vinyl monomers, but typically requires rigorous oxygen exclusion for optimal results. Various approaches have been developed to achieve oxygen tolerance in ATRP, with the field making overall progress in this area. Techniques based on regenerating the activator have been developed to act as oxygen scavengers, allowing for more practical and accessible use of ATRP.

Conjugated Cross-linked Phenothiazines as Green or Red Light Heterogeneous Photocatalysts for Copper-Catalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Sajjad Dadashi-Silab et al.

Summary: The use of conjugated microporous polymers as heterogeneous photocatalysts has enabled efficient photoinduced copper-catalyzed ATRP under green or red light irradiation, resulting in high conversion and well-controlled polymerization of acrylate and methacrylate monomers. The heterogeneous nature of the photocatalyst allows for easy separation and efficient reusability in subsequent polymerizations.

Assemblies of Polyacrylonitrile-Derived Photoactive Polymers as Blue and Green Light Photo-Cocatalysts for Cu-Catalyzed ATRP in Water and Organic Solvents

Mingkang Sun et al.

Summary: Photoluminescent nanosized quasi-spherical polymeric assemblies, ht-PLPPAN, prepared through the hydrothermal reaction of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), have been demonstrated to photo-induce atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reactions under blue or green light irradiation in water or organic solvents. Mechanistic studies suggest that ht-PLPPAN supports the polymerization process by facilitating Cu-I catalysis and direct activation of alkyl bromide initiators, leading to significantly faster activation compared to ht-PLPPAN.

Light-Mediated Polymerization Induced by Semiconducting Nanomaterials: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives

Yifan Zhu et al.

Summary: Direct capture of solar energy for chemical transformation via photocatalysis is a cost-effective and energy-saving approach for constructing organic compounds. Photopolymerization, a robust strategy for producing specialty polymers with complex structures, faces a key challenge of scarcity in effective photomediators. Nanomaterials, especially semiconducting nanomaterials, are promising candidates for photochemical reactions due to their unique optical and electrical properties.
