Surface Topography of Polyethylene Glycol Shell Nanoparticles Formed from Bottlebrush Block Copolymers Controls Interactions with Proteins and Cells

Julian Grundler et al.

Summary: This study establishes a straightforward method to precisely tailor the surface topography of PEGylated polymeric nanoparticles based on tuning the architecture of shape-persistent amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymer (BBCP) building blocks. The research demonstrates that nanoparticle formation and surface topography can be controlled by systematically changing the structural parameters of BBCP architecture, and reveals that the surface topography significantly affects the performance of PEGylated nanoparticles.

Micelles Formed by an AB Copolymer with Bottlebrush Blocks: Scaling Theory

Ekaterina B. Zhulina et al.

Summary: This study presents a scaling theory that describes the equilibrium properties of spherical micelles formed by a diblock copolymer with bottlebrush blocks in a selective solvent. The theory predicts the existence of new thermodynamic regimes for copolymers with relatively short main chains (long side chains), characterized by limiting extension of the main chains of the core or/and corona-forming blocks. These regimes with unique scaling exponents for micelle properties are not observed in micelles of conventional linear block copolymers, as demonstrated by theoretical predictions compared to experiments.

Flower-like Micelles of Polyethylene Oxide End-Capped with Cholesterol

Behrad Kangarlou et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology using self-assembled nanostructures holds great potential for biomedical and technological applications, and the study of flower-like micelles formed by cholesterol end-capped polyethylene oxide provides detailed insights into their structure and composition. Experimental and simulation results show that the morphology and internal structure of these micelles are consistent, indicating stable non-clustering micelles with potential biomedical applications.

Manipulating Phospholipid Vesicles at the Nanoscale: A Transformation from Unilamellar to Multilamellar by an n-Alkyl-poly(ethylene oxide)

Judith U. De Mel et al.

Summary: Our study showed that an n-alkyl-PEO polymer significantly influences the structure and dynamics of phospholipid vesicles, leading to multilayer formation, size increase, and changes in lipid tail relaxation. This suggests potential applications in controlling membrane properties for technical materials, drug delivery, and nutraceuticals.

Dynamical Comparison of Different Polymer Architectures-Bottlebrush vs Linear Polymer

Karin J. Bichler et al.

Summary: By using dielectric spectroscopy and fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), the dynamical behavior of different polymer architectures based on PDMS was compared. The segmental dynamics were found to be independent of architecture, but significant differences were observed in large-scale chain dynamics.

Bottlebrush Polymer Excipients Enhance Drug Solubility: Influence of End-Group Hydrophilicity and Thermoresponsiveness

Monica L. Ohnsorg et al.

Summary: By synthesizing bottlebrush polymers with different hydrophilic end-groups, the thermoresponsive properties and solubility of the polymers can be controlled to enhance the solubility of drugs. Carboxylated bottlebrush copolymers are more stable compared to linear copolymers, and can achieve higher drug loadings.
