Influence of eccentric loading on the structural behavior of column bases

Jan Ungermann et al.

Summary: The influence of eccentric loading on column base structural behavior has been studied through experimental investigations, showing significant effects on punching shear strength, deformation, and crack formation. The findings confirm an increased influence of load eccentricity for larger slenderness and highlight the importance of considering reference values in evaluation.

Eccentric punching tests on column bases - New insights into the inner concrete strain development

Jan Ungermann et al.

Summary: In the past, the punching shear behavior of centrically loaded column bases has been predominantly studied, even though eccentric loads are common in engineering practice. Many design approaches define coefficients to increase the acting load in order to consider the uneven shear stress distributions around the column. However, due to limited test data for eccentric punching tests, an assessment of the design approaches is not reliable. This study conducted several centrically and eccentrically loaded punching tests to analyze the effects of systematically graded load eccentricities and found that load eccentricity significantly influences the punching shear capacity and load-bearing behavior. Strain measurements in the slab were used to analyze the circumferential multi-axial stress state inside the concrete. The compression ring in eccentrically loaded column bases does not fully develop under eccentric loads unlike in centrically loaded bases. An experimental approach for describing the influence of load eccentricity on punching shear strength was derived and compared with existing design approaches. The results indicate potential for optimizing the design provisions of column bases with eccentric loads.
