Insomnia, sleep loss, and circadian sleep disturbances in mood disorders: a pathway toward neurodegeneration and neuroprogression? A theoretical review

Laura Palagini et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the relationships between sleep, circadian phasing alterations, and neurodegenerative/neuroprogressive processes in mood disorders. Studies suggest that insomnia and altered circadian sleep may contribute to neurodegeneration and neuroprogression, increasing risks such as accumulation of neurotoxic proteins and oxidative stress. Targeting sleep disturbances may have neuroprotective benefits for mood disorders.

Diurnal Rhythm Robustness in Individuals With PTSD and Insomnia and The Association With Sleep

Luis Mascaro et al.

Summary: This study compared diurnal rhythms in individuals with PTSD, insomnia, and healthy controls, finding that those with PTSD and insomnia showed significantly lower interdaily stability, relative amplitude, and sleep regularity compared to controls. There were no significant differences in mean diurnal rhythm metrics between individuals with PTSD and insomnia, but there were differences in inter-individual variability, particularly in interdaily stability and relative amplitude.
