Emerging novel polymeric adsorbents for removing dyes from wastewater: A comprehensive review and comparison with other adsorbents

Omid Moradi et al.

Summary: Dye molecules are highly hazardous compounds for human and animal health, with excess intake potentially creating toxic impacts. The adsorption process is practical for dye removal from wastewater, with polymeric adsorbents showing efficiency in various environmental conditions and attracting researchers, despite lacking reliable information. Studying influential parameters, such as type, properties, and capacity of adsorbents, alongside modeling and comparison with non-polymeric adsorbents, provides insight into the dominant mechanism of adsorption capacity.

High-performance mixed-matrix membranes enabled by organically/inorganic modified montmorillonite for the treatment of hazardous textile wastewater

Ahmed Abdel-Karim et al.

Summary: In this study, a low pressure-driven ultrafiltration membrane was developed using cellulose acetate, alpha-aminophosphonate modified montmorillonite, and Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles, showing increased flux and reduced fouling rate compared to neat CA membrane. The fabricated membranes exhibited durability, high efficiency in treating textile wastewater, and adequate rejection for hazardous contaminants such as chromium, nickel, lead, and fluoride. Overall, fillers enhanced the hydrophilicity, mechanical stability, and performance of the membranes, showing potential for hazardous textile wastewater treatment.

Advanced oxidation processes in the removal of organic substances from produced water: Potential, configurations, and research needs

Marco Coha et al.

Summary: Produced water is the main by-product of fossil fuel extraction activities, which requires adequate treatment to purify its quality for recycling or discharge. Advanced oxidation processes are increasingly studied for the removal of organic pollutants in produced water, including various methods such as Fenton-based oxidation. Different oxidation methods can be used as a polishing stage or as an auxiliary treatment for further biological processes and membrane separation, with the potential for combination within the same system.

Removal and degradation of mixed dye pollutants by integrated adsorption-photocatalysis technique using 2-D MoS2/TiO2 nanocomposite

Gauthaman Chandrabose et al.

Summary: The study focuses on using MoS2/TiO2 nanocomposites to remove mixed dye pollutants through a two-stage adsorption/photocatalysis process. By using a high percentage of MoS2 in Stage-I and a low percentage in Stage-II, the process showed complete removal of methylene blue dye 5 times faster than conventional single-stage water treatment processes. Additionally, the method demonstrated excellent performance in removing mixed dye pollutants even at higher concentrations.

Superior adsorptive removal of azo dyes from aqueous solution by a Ni (II)-doped metal?organic framework

Xiu-Ling Li et al.

Summary: Ni(II) doping in MIL-101(Cr) resulted in morphological and structural defects, creating a new mesoporous structure that enhanced the adsorption efficiency for linear anionic azo dyes (e.g. Congo red and methyl orange) but decreased it for non-linear azo dyes (e.g. acid chrome blue K) due to steric hindrance. The adsorption performance of Ni(II)-doped MIL-101(Cr) was found to be controlled by the synergetic interplay among electrostatic interactions, steric hindrance, and the morphological and structural defects, pore volume, and mesoporous structure of the adsorbent.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of azo dye from textile wastewater effluents using oxidation and coagulation processes. Potassium ferrate was found to be an effective oxidant and coagulant, achieving nearly 100% removal of azo dyes under optimized conditions. Despite its high efficiency, the removal performance decreased at higher pH levels.
