Potential design problems for ITER fusion device

A. Hassanein et al.

Summary: The international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) is a global project demonstrating the feasibility of fusion energy technology. Building a successful magnetic fusion device is challenging due to potential damage from abnormal events, such as plasma disruptions and edge-localized modes (ELMs).

Estimate of pre-thermal quench non-thermal electron density profile during Ar pellet shutdowns of low-density target plasmas in DIII-D

E. M. Hollmann et al.

Summary: By combining electron cyclotron emission and soft x-ray data, the radial density profile of pre-thermal quench (pre-TQ) early-time non-thermal (hot) electrons in DIII-D target plasmas during rapid shutdown is estimated. The presence of early-time low-energy hot electrons ahead of the argon pellet is suggested to affect pellet ablation rate. Fokker-Planck modeling shows significant hot electron current during pre-TQ phase, and comparison with post-TQ hot electron current suggests radial loss of hot electron current during thermal quench may be larger than previously estimated in DIII-D.

Lithium, a path to make fusion energy affordable

A. de Castro et al.

Summary: This tutorial article reviews the technological, physics, and economic basis for a magnetic fusion device utilizing a flowing liquid lithium divertor and operating in a low-recycling plasma regime, offering a promising alternative route to fusion energy production. It emphasizes the theoretical basis of energy confinement and fusion performance, the obstacles to developing necessary systems for a flowing liquid lithium solution at reactor scale, and the current scientific and engineering endeavors at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign related to this alternative reactor option.
