Landscape resource management for sustainable crop intensification

K. H. Anantha et al.

Summary: Crop intensification is necessary to meet food demands, and this study compares landscape-based interventions with individual plot-level interventions in the Indian semi-arid tropics. The results show that landscape-based interventions, which primarily address moisture availability, lead to higher crop production, increased income, improved water productivity, and reduced soil loss and increased base flow availability compared to plot-level interventions.

Impact of raised beds on surface runoff and soil loss in Alfisols and Vertisols

Kaushal K. Garg et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the soil hydraulic properties of Alfisols and Vertisols and develops rainfall-runoff-soil loss relationships through long-term hydrological monitoring. The results show that the raised bed method is more effective than the flat bed method in reducing surface runoff and soil loss. In addition, Vertisols have higher water storage capacity, resulting in less runoff.

Summary: Dryland smallholders are facing challenges in achieving resilience and agricultural sustainability due to factors such as extreme weather events and climate change. While they have been utilizing local knowledge to enhance short-term resilience, concerns about long-term climatic changes and emerging armed conflicts could hinder their ability to adapt. Further research is needed into innovative practices for sustainability and resilience in response to a changing climate and other social challenges.

Impact of Rainwater Harvesting on Hydrological Processes in a Fragile Watershed of South Asia

Kaushal K. Garg et al.

Summary: The study in a watershed in western India showed that Agricultural Water Management (AWM) interventions significantly improved groundwater recharge, reduced surface runoff and soil erosion, increased cultivation of high-value crops on fallow land, and boosted household income. Despite concerns about reduced downstream water availability, the interventions led to positive outcomes in terms of sustainable food production and ecosystem improvement.
