Epicardial adipose tissue as a mediator of cardiac arrhythmias

Kiran Haresh Kumar Patel et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias. A growing body of evidence suggests that adiposity, particularly epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), independently contributes to this risk through the secretion of proinflammatory substances and transduction of inflammation to the myocardium. This review explores the mechanisms underlying the adverse electrophysiological remodeling caused by EAT accumulation and inflammation. Weight reduction and regression of EAT volume are highlighted as potential strategies to ameliorate arrhythmic risk.

Metabolically unhealthy and overweight phenotypes are associated with increased levels of inflammatory cytokines: a population-based study

Fabricia Geralda Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between cytokine levels and metabolic phenotypes, and the results showed that an unhealthy metabolic profile is associated with higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Excess weight and metabolic dysregulation are related to inflammation, especially when both conditions are present, possibly due to visceral adiposity.

NAFLD and cardiovascular diseases: a clinical review

Summary: NAFLD, the most common chronic liver disease in Western countries, is closely associated with metabolic comorbidities and poses a significant risk for cardiovascular disease development, especially in patients with progressive forms of the disease and those with concurrent type 2 diabetes.

Reporting incidental coronary, aortic valve and cardiac calcification on non-gated thoracic computed tomography, a consensus statement from the BSCI/BSCCT and BSTI

Michelle Claire Williams et al.

Summary: Incidental coronary and cardiac calcification should be reviewed and reported on non-gated thoracic CT scans, with a simple patient-based score and recommendations for subsequent management. Additionally, other cardiac calcifications, such as aortic valve calcification, should also be identified and reported.

Incidentally identified coronary artery calcium on non-contrast CT scan of the chest predicts major adverse cardiac events among hospital inpatients

Christopher Yu et al.

Summary: The study showed that incidentally identified coronary artery calcium (CAC) on CT scan among hospital inpatients provides prognostic information independent of cardiovascular risk factors. Therefore, these patients may benefit from aggressive risk factor modification given the high event rate in the short term.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is closely associated with cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, sharing common pathophysiological processes. It is particularly prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to reduce the burden of adverse outcomes.

Association Between Epicardial Adipose Tissue and Stroke

Maria Ines Rosa et al.

Summary: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is correlated with increased risk of stroke, possibly related to stroke episodes; regardless of imaging methods, the association between EAT and stroke remains; metabolic syndrome and atrial fibrillation may increase the risk of stroke.

Summary: The study found a correlation between epicardial fat thickness (EFT) and left ventricular diastolic function parameters, with EFT2 showing a negative correlation with mean e', indicating the need for attention to this type of fat in cardiovascular disease therapy.
