Mental health in the post-lockdown pandemic phase: Relief or exacerbation of psychological distress? A cross-sectional study in the general population in Italy

Maria Donata Orfei et al.

Summary: This study is one of the first to investigate the mental health in the Italian adult population during the post-lockdown period. It identified demographic and psychological predictors for a worse outcome. The results showed that women, lower age, and suppression were associated with higher levels of negative affect, depression, anxiety, stress, and work addiction. A small percentage of participants reported depressive, anxiety, stress symptoms, as well as post-traumatic symptoms and signs of psychological distress. Compared to the lockdown period, the levels of depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms were lower, possibly due to the relaxation of preventive measures. However, post-traumatic symptoms and psychological distress still persisted. The study highlights the importance of monitoring psychological adaptation over time in both general and at-risk populations.

Psychological distress associated with the COVID-19 lockdown: A two-wave network analysis

Maria Di Blasi et al.

Summary: This study found through network analysis that depression, stress, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19 formed a spatially contiguous pattern. After the lockdown, fear of COVID-19 weakened in the network, while intolerant of uncertainty and emotion suppression were associated with depression. Emotion regulation was connected to depression, but not stress and anxiety. Perceived emotional support had few connections to the other nodes in the network.
