The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business expectations

Brent H. Meyer et al.

Summary: We document and evaluate how businesses are reacting to the COVID-19 crisis through August 2020. We find that firms perceive the crisis primarily as a demand shock and report more disruptions to sales activity than to supply chains. Despite supply chain disruptions, firms expect to lower near-term selling prices. Firms have also implemented wage cuts and anticipate further reductions. Firms' inflation expectations have decreased, while household measures have increased. However, longer-run inflation expectations remain relatively stable.

OnAI-Comp: An Online AI Experts Competing Framework for Early Sepsis Detection

Anni Zhou et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a major public concern due to its high mortality, morbidity, and financial cost. There are many existing works of early sepsis prediction using different machine learning models to mitigate the outcomes brought by sepsis. In the practical scenario, the dataset grows dynamically as new patients visit the hospital. Most existing models, being offline models and having used retrospective observational data, cannot be updated and improved dynamically using the new observational data.

Heart Rate Variability as a Possible Predictive Marker for Acute Inflammatory Response in COVID-19 Patients

Frederick Hasty et al.

Summary: This study found that significant decreases in HRV preceded elevations in CRP in COVID-19 patients, demonstrating its importance in predicting inflammatory responses. These findings could be crucial in early detection of disease progression, particularly in COVID-19 patients.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural America

J. Tom Mueller et al.

Summary: The impact of the pandemic on rural populations has been severe, with significant negative effects on unemployment, overall life satisfaction, mental health, and economic outlook. These impacts have been consistent across different age, ethnicity, education, and gender groups. The findings highlight the need for a larger interdisciplinary research effort on COVID-19 that includes rural areas.

Use of Physiological Data From a Wearable Device to Identify SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Symptoms and Predict COVID-19 Diagnosis: Observational Study

Robert P. Hirten et al.

Summary: This study found that HRV metrics collected through wearable devices can predict the diagnosis of COVID-19 and identify related symptoms. Significant changes in HRV were observed prior to the diagnosis of COVID-19, demonstrating the predictive ability of this metric to identify COVID-19 infection.

Undiagnosed SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity during the first 6 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

Heather Kalish et al.

Summary: The study analyzed undiagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections in the United States and found a high prevalence rate, with different seropositivity estimates among various racial, age, gender, ethnic, and urban/rural groups. Data indicated that as of mid-July 2020, there were an estimated 16.8 million undiagnosed infections in the United States, with 4.8 undiagnosed cases for every diagnosed case of COVID-19.

Characterizing COVID-19 and Influenza Illnesses in the Real World via Person-Generated Health Data

Allison Shapiro et al.

Summary: The study examined health data from 230 individuals who reported a COVID-19 diagnosis, finding that COVID-19 patients had distinct symptoms lasting longer and peaking later compared to flu patients. Wearable data showed significant changes in daily steps and anomalous resting heart rate measurements for both flu and COVID-19 cohorts.

Wearable sensor data and self-reported symptoms for COVID-19 detection

Giorgio Quer et al.

Summary: The study developed a smartphone app that combines smartwatch and activity tracker data to monitor COVID-19 infection continuously. The combination of symptom and sensor data showed better performance in distinguishing COVID-19 positive from negative cases compared to models that consider symptoms alone. This suggests that passive data collection from personal sensors may complement virus testing methods.

Heart Rate Variability as a Possible Predictive Marker for Acute Inflammatory Response in COVID-19 Patients

Frederick Hasty et al.

Summary: This study tracked changes in HRV relative to changes in CRP in COVID-19 patients and found that a decrease in HRV of greater than 40% preceded a 50% increase in CRP within 72 hours, with a 90.9% positive predictive value. Early detection of increasing inflammation may be vital in mitigating the deleterious effects of an abnormal inflammatory response in COVID-19 patients.
