Design and pilot testing of a 26-gauge impedance-electromyography needle in wild-type and ALS mice

Seward B. Rutkove et al.

Summary: This study designed, manufactured, and tested a prototype iEMG needle that can record impedance and electromyography (EMG) data. The results showed that the EMG data obtained with the iEMG needle were similar to those obtained with a commercially available concentric EMG needle. The impedance data also revealed significant differences between the ALS and WT mice.

Modeling and Simulation of Needle Electrical Impedance Myography in Nonhomogeneous Isotropic Skeletal Muscle

Xuesong Luo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a bio-physics driven analytical framework for describing needle electrical impedance myography (EIM) measurements in a nonhomogeneous bidomain tissue model. The results show that EIM is influenced by the vicinity of tissue with different electrical properties.

Electrical impedance myography: A critical review and outlook

Benjamin Sanchez et al.

Summary: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) technology is being used in neuromuscular disease research to assess muscle health. Despite established correlations between EIM outcomes and other data, there is a lack of analytical discussion on EIM, and this review aims to explain EIM and provide technical guidance.

Nonhomogeneous volume conduction effects affecting needle electromyography: an analytical and simulation study

Xuesong Luo et al.

Summary: This study developed a framework to investigate the conduction effect of extracellular abnormalities and electrode positioning on extracellular local field potential (LFP) recordings. Results show that the amplitude, phase, and duration of LFPs are influenced by the electrode position in relation to tissue with different electrical properties. The framework reveals the impact of multiple mechanisms on LFPs, including changes in the distance between the source-electrode and tissue electrical properties.

A framework for modeling bioimpedance measurements of nonhomogeneous tissues: a theoretical and simulation study

Xuesong Luo et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel theoretical framework for modeling bioimpedance measurements of nonhomogeneous tissues, validated through case studies and simulations. The proposed model shows good agreement with finite element model simulations, providing a new perspective to interpret nonhomogeneous bioimpedance measurements. The developed framework offers compact analytical expressions to model complex nonhomogeneous biological measurements in various applications such as cardiac, brain, and respiratory applications.
