COVID-19 Pandemic Impact on Trajectories in Cardiometabolic Health, Physical Activity, and Functioning Among Adults from the 2006-2020 Health and Retirement Study

Hind A. Beydoun et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiometabolic health, physical activity, and functioning among older adults in the United States. The results show that the pandemic is associated with increased BMI, cardiometabolic risk factors and/or chronic conditions, and worsened physical functioning. Health disparities based on sociodemographic characteristics are also highlighted.

Preparing for the long-haul: Autonomic complications of COVID-19

Nicholas W. Larsen et al.

Summary: As the global numbers of COVID-19 cases increase, chronic neurological symptoms, including autonomic dysfunction, are being reported more frequently. Evidence suggests that many patients experience chronic symptoms long after their acute infection, leading to the new diagnostic category of post-acute COVID syndrome. The autonomic symptoms of post-acute COVID syndrome may play a central role in the underlying pathophysiology.

Association of Timing and Balance of Physical Activity and Rest/Sleep With Risk of COVID-19: A UK Biobank Study

Alex V. Rowlands et al.

Summary: The study found that not only physical activity, but also quality sleep/rest and regular sleep/rest patterns, are important factors in determining the risk of COVID-19. Increased variability in the timing of sleep/rest was consistently associated with a higher risk of COVID-19.

A data-driven approach to identify risk profiles and protective drugs in COVID-19

Pietro E. Cippa et al.

Summary: This study, based on comprehensive monitoring of 576 COVID-19 patients, utilized different statistical approaches to gain insights on risk factor identification and dependency structure among clinical and demographic characteristics. The results indicated a significant role of RAASi in reducing the risk of death in COVID-19 patients, suggesting the need for further investigation in prospective randomized controlled trials.

Vascular Endothelial Damage in the Pathogenesis of Organ Injury in Severe COVID-19

Annabelle Dupont et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between endothelial damage and immune dysregulation with organ failure, thrombus formation, and death in 82 patients with COVID-19, finding a direct role of endotheliopathy in organ failure and an association between dysregulated immune response and respiratory failure, liver injury, and death. Thrombi from COVID-19 patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation showed increased neutrophil accumulation and neutrophil extracellular traps compared to non-COVID-19 thrombi.
