Revisiting the sex pheromone of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, a new invasive pest in South China

Nan-Ji Jiang et al.

Summary: The study identified the sex pheromone components of the fall armyworm using gas chromatography and other methods, and found that Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac are the principal sex pheromone components. This research provides important insights for the control and management of the fall armyworm.

The irritant receptor TRPA1 mediates the mosquito repellent effect of catnip

Nadia Melo et al.

Summary: Catnip is a common garden herb known for its effects on domestic cats, medicinal properties, and repellent action on insects. Research shows that catnip triggers aversion in insects by activating the conserved chemical irritant receptor TRPA1, providing a potential target for the development of safe insect repellents.

Characterization of Halyomorpha halys TAR1 reveals its involvement in (E)-2-decenal pheromone perception

Luca Finetti et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the molecular and functional profile of the HhTAR1 gene in the pest Halyomorpha halys, focusing on its role in olfactory functions. They found that HhTAR1 is primarily expressed in the adult brain and antennae, and also in early developmental stages. Through RNAi approach, they were able to reduce HhTAR1 expression and observed a decreased sensitivity to alarm pheromones in the treated nymphs. These results provide important insights into the role of TAR1 in olfaction regulation and suggest potential innovative methods for pest control.

Border Habitat Effects on Captures of Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Pheromone Traps and Fruit Injury at Harvest in Apple and Peach Orchards in the Mid-Atlantic, USA

James Christopher Bergh et al.

Summary: Brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) is a significant threat to tree fruit, corn, soybean, and vegetable crops in the USA and abroad, with research focusing on reducing insecticide applications through management tactics at crop edges. Woodlands and other habitats bordering orchards play a key role in BMSB invasion and crop injury, highlighting the importance of targeted management strategies.

Attraction of Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, Halyomorpha halys, to Blooming Sunflower Semiochemicals

Warren H. L. Wong et al.

Summary: The polyphagous invasive brown marmorated stink bug can discriminate different phenological stages of host plants, with blooming sunflowers being the most attractive in laboratory experiments. Analysis of the headspace odorants revealed a marked increase in odorant abundance as plants transitioned from pre-bloom to bloom, with a synthetic blend of these odorants attracting H. halys females in laboratory olfactometer experiments. This study suggests that a simple yet effective sunflower semiochemical blend could potentially improve monitoring and control tactics for H. halys.

Refining Pheromone Lures for the Invasive Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Through Collaborative Trials in the United States and Europe

Summary: The study found that the loading rate of PHER has a greater impact on trapping brown marmorated stink bugs, but reducing PHER loading can be offset by increasing MDT loading; lures containing PHER and EDT can increase captures, but high EDT loading does not significantly improve capture rates; experimental polyethylene dispensers did not outperform standard dispensers, resulting in lower trap captures in most cases.

Summary: Insects, such as the brown marmorated stink bug and its egg parasitoid, use olfaction to interact with their host plants, with findings showing preferences of the stink bug nymphs for apple and peach odors and the parasitoid for specific compound combinations.
