Modeling the volatility changes in Lake Urmia water level time series

Farshad Fathian et al.

Summary: The study suggests a fresh look at the decline in Lake Urmia water level by considering volatility changes since 2000. Short- and long-term persistence showed descending and ascending trends, respectively, while the GARCH(1,1) model proved satisfactory for interpreting pre- and post-turn point events. Changes were found exclusive to Lake Urmia and accelerated after 2006 based on anomalies and coefficient of variation compared to neighboring Lake Sevan and Lake Van.

Streamflow naturalization methods: a review

Morgane Terrier et al.

Summary: Various naturalization methods have been developed to remove anthropogenic influences from streamflow time series, with some studies considering naturalized flows as true natural flows. However, the assumptions and uncertainties associated with these methods are often overlooked. This review provides an overview of streamflow naturalization approaches, discusses terminology, classifies methods based on data requirements and assumptions, reviews studies applying naturalization methods, and assesses challenges, with a focus on recent research in France.

Minimizing physical habitat impacts at downstream of diversion dams by a multiobjective optimization of environmental flow regime

Mahdi Sedighkia et al.

Summary: The present study successfully connects physical habitat simulation with the irrigation loss function to assess the optimal environmental flow regime. By using a data-driven model and multi-objective optimization approach, a fair balance between habitat suitability and irrigation demand is achieved. The results showed that the physical habitat data-driven model is effective in assessing habitat suitability, and the proposed multi-objective optimization model is able to properly assess environmental flow, minimizing physical habitat impact while meeting water demand.
