Silicon: A neglected micronutrient essential for bone health

Based on data from studies on animal and human models, an intake of around 25 mg of silicon per day may be beneficial for bone health. Research on the use of silicon dietary supplements has shown that combined treatment with orthosilicic acid (6 mg), calcium, and vitamin D may have a potentially beneficial effect on femoral bone mineral density compared to using calcium and vitamin D alone.

Association between vitamin D status and long-term falls-related hospitalization risk in older women

This relationship seems to be independent of better physical function observed in women with higher 25OHD levels.
