Iron deficiency in heart failure patients: the French CARENFER prospective study

Alain Cohen-Solal et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is a major comorbidity in patients with chronic heart failure, and its prevalence is high, especially in patients with decompensated heart failure or preserved left ventricular ejection fraction. The prevalence of iron deficiency defined by transferrin saturation index is higher than that defined by the European Society of Cardiology guidelines in decompensated heart failure patients.

Impact of change in iron status over time on clinical outcomes in heart failure according to ejection fraction phenotype

Sarah Fitzsimons et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is equally prevalent in HFpEF and HFrEF but is negatively prognostic only in HFrEF. Persistence of iron deficiency is strongly associated with mortality, while resolution is not as significant. IDTsat is the superior definition of iron deficiency and should be considered in future trials investigating the efficacy of intravenous iron replacement in patients with HFrEF.

Iron deficiency anemia in IBD: an overlooked comorbidity

Yash Shah et al.

Summary: Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is a common complication of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that significantly impacts quality of life and can lead to developmental and cognitive issues. Current biochemical tests have limitations in distinguishing between IDA and anemia of chronic disease in IBD patients. Understanding the pathogenesis of IDA in IBD can lead to the development of new diagnostic tests and treatment options for better management.

Impact of change in iron status over time on clinical outcomes in heart failure according to ejection fraction phenotype

Sarah Fitzsimons et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is equally prevalent in HFpEF and HFrEF, but negatively impacts prognosis only in HFrEF. Persistent iron deficiency is strongly associated with mortality while resolution does not have a significant effect. Transferrin saturation is the superior definition of iron deficiency and should inform future trials investigating the efficacy of intravenous iron replacement in patients with HFrEF.
