Predicting access to healthful food retailers with machine learning

Modhurima Dey Amin et al.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning and census tract data to predict the modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) in order to analyze access to healthful food in U.S. households. The research found that food deserts and food swamps are intrinsically different, requiring separate policy attention, with factors such as population density, presence of minority populations, property value, and income playing significant roles in access to healthful food.

Associations between dietary patterns and the incidence of total and fatal cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality in 116,806 individuals from the UK Biobank: a prospective cohort study

Min Gao et al.

Summary: This study identified two dietary patterns associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. The first pattern was characterized by high intakes of chocolate, butter, and low-fiber bread, while the second pattern included higher intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juice. These findings highlight specific foods and beverages that contribute to unhealthy dietary patterns and support evidence-based dietary recommendations to reduce health risks.

Healthy Food Prescription Programs and their Impact on Dietary Behavior and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Saiuj Bhat et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of healthy food prescription programs and found that such programs can increase fruit and vegetable consumption, reduce BMI, and lower HbA1c. However, there are significant heterogeneity, methodological limitations, and moderate to very low certainty of evidence in the included studies. Well-designed, large, randomized controlled trials are needed to further establish the efficacy of healthy food prescription programs.

Nutrient density and affordability of foods in Brazil by food group and degree of processing

Kennya Beatriz Siqueira et al.

Summary: Affordable nutrition refers to the relationship between nutrient density of foods and their monetary cost. The study developed a nutrient density score and affordability metrics for commonly consumed foods in Brazil. Grains, fats, and sweets were found to be more energy-dense but had lower nutrient scores compared to dairy, vegetables, and fruits. Vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, and dairy were identified as the lowest cost sources of multiple nutrients in Brazil. Ultra-processed foods had higher energy density and lower nutrient scores compared to unprocessed foods. The goal for Brazil's food system should be achieving high nutrient density at an affordable cost.
