On inflammatory hypothesis of depression: what is the role of IL-6 in the middle of the chaos?

Elnaz Roohi et al.

Summary: Alterations in IL-6 levels may contribute to depression symptomatology in various ways, both in the periphery and the brain. IL-6 acts on multiple target tissues throughout the body, and dysregulation of this cytokine can lead to events relevant to depression. Blocking the effects of IL-6 may prevent further escalation of inflammatory responses and open new avenues in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of this debilitating disorder.

Volatility as a Concept to Understand the Impact of Stress on the Microbiome

Thomaz F. S. Bastiaanssen et al.

Summary: The microbiome-gut-brain-axis is a complex phenomenon affected by stress, exhibiting volatility and influencing stress responses. The study found a significant correlation between volatility and stress response indicators, observed in different experimental groups and health volunteers, as well as demonstrating inter-species similarities on a functional level.

Species- and Age/Generation-Dependent Adherence of Bifidobacterium bifidum to Human Intestinal Mucus In Vitro

Gaku Harata et al.

Summary: This study found age/generation-related differences in the adhesion properties of B. bifidum and other strains, with B. bifidum showing stronger adhesion to neonatal intestinal mucus, suggesting a deeper symbiotic relationship with infants, particularly neonates.

Role of Bifidobacteria on Infant Health

Silvia Saturio et al.

Summary: Bifidobacteria are crucial microorganisms during infancy, playing a dominant role in the healthy development of breastfed infants. The different species and quantities of Bifidobacteria have been shown to be important for infant health, with reduced levels potentially linked to infant diseases. Bifidobacterium strains are extensively studied for their probiotic properties, with research on their use as probiotics in neonates.

The International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) consensus statement on the definition and scope of postbiotics

Seppo Salminen et al.

Summary: In 2019, ISAPP convened a panel of experts to review the definition and scope of postbiotics. The panel defined postbiotics as a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host. This definition aims to provide common ground for future activities in this area.

Psychogenic polydipsia in a female adolescent without a psychiatric background: A case report

Elise Nauwynck et al.

Summary: Psychological stress is a risk factor for primary polydipsia in adolescents, and a detailed family and social history can help differentiate primary polydipsia from diabetes insipidus in adolescents with complex presentations of polydipsia and polyuria.
