The demands of the extra-time period of soccer: A systematic review

Adam Field et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined soccer-specific exercise during 120 min of play and provided practical recommendations and future research opportunities. The findings showed that players cover less distance and exhibit reduced technical performance during extra-time compared to the preceding 90 min. Carbohydrate intake may improve dribbling performance during extra-time, while recovery measures may be further compromised following extra-time compared to 90 min.

Use of GPS to measure external load and estimate the incidence of muscle injuries in men's football: A novel descriptive study

Marc Guitart et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between external load measured by GPS and incidence of lower limb muscle injuries in football players. The results suggested a direct proportional relationship between external load and injury incidence, and GPS metrics such as HMLD, HSR, PL, and TD may help describe the pattern and magnitude of injuries.

Inter- and intra-microcycle external load analysis in female professional soccer players: A playing position approach

Elba Diaz-Seradilla et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the differences in external load across the microcycle in professional female soccer players. The results show that different microcycles and training sessions have different effects on external load, and there are also differences in external load among players in different positions. The study suggests that fitness and conditioning staff should adjust training sessions according to the characteristics of each position to optimize training effects.

Assessment of energy availability and associated risk factors in professional female soccer players

Samantha L. Moss et al.

Summary: The study assessed energy availability (EA) of professional female soccer players during a competitive season, finding only 15% had optimal EA, 62% reduced, and 23% low EA. Results showed higher EA on rest days compared to others, and higher on light training days compared to heavy training days.

Bidirectional Interactions between the Menstrual Cycle, Exercise Training, and Macronutrient Intake in Women: A Review

Silvia Rocha-Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Women have specific physiological characteristics influenced by sex hormones and the menstrual cycle, which have complex bidirectional relationships with exercise and nutritional intake. Individualized interventions are necessary as the effects of menstrual cycle phases on exercise and nutrition vary greatly between individuals, making average data irrelevant and potentially misleading.

Physiological Characteristics of Female Soccer Players and Health and Performance Considerations: A Narrative Review

Rebecca K. Randell et al.

Summary: The past decade has seen significant growth in female soccer, but there are still many research gaps in talent identification, physical demands, injury risk, and nutrition. Future studies need to focus more on the characteristics and needs of female soccer players, particularly in nutrition, injury prevention, and physical training.

How Does the Dietary Intake of Female Field-Based Team Sport Athletes Compare to Dietary Recommendations for Health and Performance? A Systematic Literature Review

Michele Renard et al.

Summary: Female field-based team sport athletes generally have insufficient dietary intake, particularly in terms of overall energy, carbohydrate, and iron intake, when compared to dietary recommendations. Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind this and to explore the potential negative consequences.

Recommendations and Nutritional Considerations for Female Athletes: Health and Performance

Bryan Holtzman et al.

Summary: Optimal nutrition is crucial for athletes to achieve peak health and performance, but the specific effects of women's physiology on energy and fluid needs are often overlooked. Understanding how hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle impact metabolism and fluid retention is key in optimizing female athletes' performance. Research in this area is essential for developing tailored nutritional strategies and enhancing overall performance outcomes.
