Collagen Type I Biomaterials as Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Gustavo A. Rico-Llanos et al.

Summary: Collagen type I is widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity, but it also has drawbacks such as high biodegradability and low mechanical strength. Recent efforts have been focused on designing and producing collagen implants to enhance bone regeneration.

Effects of Scaffold Pore Morphologies on Glucose Transport Limitations in Hollow Fibre Membrane Bioreactor for Bone Tissue Engineering: Experiments and Numerical Modelling

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: This research focused on the effects of pore morphology on nutrient transport behavior in hollow fiber membrane bioreactors using different electrospun PCL scaffolds. The study showed a negative linear relationship between glucose diffusivities across PCL scaffolds and minimum glucose concentrations, indicating that scaffolds with higher diffusivities lead to improved glucose consumption efficiency. The results are expected to aid in optimizing HFMB designs and conducting more accurate upscaling analyses for bioreactors.

Degradation and Characterisation of Electrospun Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) Scaffolds for Vascular Tissue Engineering

Morteza Bazgir et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the characteristics and degradation effects of PLGA- and PCL-based nanofibrous scaffolds, finding that longer electrospinning times resulted in stronger mechanical properties and maintained fiber structure. Both PCL and PLGA scaffolds demonstrated adequate degradation over time, with slight increase in fiber diameter and substantial decrease in pore size and porosity percentage. This experiment suggests promise for PCL and PLGA in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.
