Wood-water interactions of thermally modified, acetylated and melamine formaldehyde resin impregnated beech wood

Petr Cermak et al.

Summary: The wood-water interactions of modified beech wood were studied, and the results showed that the extent of interaction depended on the thermal modification temperature and type of chemical modification. Thermally modified wood had lower water vapour absorption, with more severe treatments resulting in greater reduction. Acetylation had the greatest impact on water vapour absorption and dimensional stability. Modified wood also exhibited slower and gradual swelling compared to the reference specimens.

Thermal modification of wood-a review: chemical changes and hygroscopicity

Callum Hill et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of cell wall moisture content during thermal modification process on the properties of thermally modified timber (TMT). It compares TMT modified under dry and wet conditions, analyzing the role of hydroxyl groups, cell wall polymer mobility, and crosslinking in sorption behavior. The study also raises questions regarding the role of OH groups in sorption behavior based on the changes observed in TMT after water leaching post-treatment.

Calibration of Electrical Resistance to Moisture Content for Beech Laminated Veneer Lumber BauBuche S and BauBuche Q

Philippe Groenquist et al.

Summary: Resistance measurements were used to monitor wood moisture content in beech laminated veneer lumber under different relative humidity conditions. Variations were observed between different products and depths, and calibration parameters for models with two or three parameters were established through regression analysis.

Density Profile Analysis of Laminated Beech Veneer Lumber (BauBuche)

Nick Engehausen et al.

Summary: During the initial moistening, an irreversible swelling was detected in laminated beech veneer lumber. The wood substance was hypothesised to be compressed during hot pressing, leading to higher density at the adhesive joints. The density in the middle of the veneers corresponds to that of solid beech wood.

Eco-friendly and sustainable processing of wood-based materials

Emmanuel Isaac Akpan et al.

Summary: The hierarchical structures of woods can be modified to provide structural, functional, and multi-functional materials, but current methods often generate harmful waste products. Sustainable alternatives that are environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and cost effective are proposed for future material processing.
