Thermodynamic challenges for CO2 pipelines design: A critical review on the effects of impurities, water content, and low temperature

Matteo Vitali et al.

Summary: This study discusses the challenges related to the design of a CO2 pipeline, including impurities, water content, corrosion, and low-temperature scenarios. The aim is to improve the design of CO2 pipelines with low capital expenditure and operating expenses, suitable for large-scale CCS projects and meeting the requirements of the Paris Agreement.

A weighted unification yield criterion and its application in analysis of burst pressure of pipe elbow

Shun Hu Zhang et al.

Summary: A new yield criterion is proposed in this study to analyze the plastic failure of a pipe elbow and derive an analytical formula for burst pressure, taking into account material strain hardening effects. It is found that burst pressure is influenced by the strain hardening exponent and thickness-diameter ratio.

Through-wall yield ductile burst pressure of high-grade steel tube and casing with and without corroded defect

Deng Kuanhai et al.

Summary: By considering the effects of Bauschinger effect, material hardening, and intermediate principal stress on the TYBP, an accurate and reasonable formula for through-wall yield ductile burst pressure for tube and casing has been derived. The influence of BE, IPS, and yield criterion on the TYBP of tube and casing has been investigated. Eight classic through-wall yield ductile burst formulas for tube and casing made of new material have been derived, leading to the establishment of the TYBP model for HGTC with and without corrosion defects. The calculation results of the TYBP model in this paper show closer alignment with full-scale burst experimental data compared to other burst models, providing important reference for burst pressure design and estimation of HGTC in deep and ultra-deep wells.

A novel strain-based assessment method of compressive buckling of X80 corroded pipelines subjected to bending moment load

Yi Shuai et al.

Summary: This study presents a new strain-based evaluation method for predicting the buckling failure of corroded pipelines under bending loads. The critical compressive strain capacity of a corroded pipeline is primarily affected by the depth and width of the corrosion, while the effect of the corrosion length is relatively insignificant. The proposed novel strain-based evaluation method is effective and applicable for assessing the buckling resistance of corroded pipelines.

Risks and Safety of CO2 Transport via Pipeline: A Review of Risk Analysis and Modeling Approaches for Accidental Releases

Matteo Vitali et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage is an effective strategy for reducing emissions in heavy industries and gas processing. Safe transport of carbon dioxide via pipelines is crucial for large-scale projects, but modeling for heavy gases like CO2 is more challenging. Research on dispersion modeling, phase changing issues, and equation of state is key for this topic.

Assessment by finite element modelling of the mechano-electrochemical interaction at corrosion defect on elbows of oil/gas pipelines

Yi Shuai et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlinear finite element (FE) model coupled with multi-physical fields was developed to investigate the mechano-electrochemical (M-E) synergistic effect on pipeline elbows with external corrosion defects. The research found that bending radius affects the burst pressure of corroded pipe elbows. Additionally, when corrosion defects lead to local plastic strain, corrosion reactions are significantly enhanced.
