Effect of the microstructure parameters on the corrosion characteristics of Mg-Zn-Ca alloy with columnar structure

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, Mg-3 wt.%Zn-0.2 wt.%Ca alloys with different columnar structures were fabricated, and their degradation behavior in 0.9 wt.% NaCl was investigated. The results showed that the alloy with cellular structure experienced homogeneous corrosion and exhibited the lowest corrosion rate. The corrosion rate of the alloy can be evaluated using a parameter α, which is related to the microstructure of the alloy.

Development and screening of (Ca-P-Si-F)-PEO coatings for biodegradability control of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys

Lara Moreno et al.

Summary: PEO coatings were developed on MgZnxCay alloys for biomedical applications using different treatment times and a novel transparent electrolyte containing Ca, P, Si and F. The study found that Zn-rich intermetallics favor the formation of large voids in the coatings, and Ca, P, F, and Si are successfully incorporated into the coatings. The coatings consist of crystalline phases and amorphous material. Corrosion of the bare substrates can be accelerated by amino acids and organic components in the α-MEM solution, but they have no significant influence on the corrosion resistance of coated specimens. Furthermore, Zn-rich intermetallic particles in the undercoating crevice induce a more aggressive corrosive environment and enhanced micro-galvanic couple effect, leading to faster degradation of the coated alloys.

The effect of Sr addition on the microstructure and corrosion behaviour of a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy

Jun Song et al.

Summary: Alloying is an effective method to influence the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. In this study, the addition of Sr element to a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy was found to significantly deteriorate its corrosion performance. This is mainly attributed to the increased precipitation of secondary phase particles, leading to the formation of more micro-galvanic couples.

Microstructure and corrosion properties of Mg-0.5Zn-0.2Ca-0.2Ce alloy with different processing conditions

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study confirmed that Mg-0.5Zn-0.2Ca-0.2Ce alloy has better corrosion resistance due to its microstructure and protective film on the alloy surface. Additionally, the as-rolled alloy exhibits better corrosion resistance compared to the as-extruded alloy, attributed to smaller grain size, lower texture intensity, and elimination of residual stress during the annealing process.

Biocompatibility and electrochemical evaluation of ZrO2 thin films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering on MgZnCa alloy

Benjamin Millan-Ramos et al.

Summary: In this study, ZrO2 thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy to reduce its degradation rate and improve biocompatibility, cell adhesion, and proliferation. The 380 nm ZrO2 coating showed promising results in reducing degradation and H-2 evolution of the alloy in the initial 3 days after immersion, while allowing long-term degradation of the bare alloy. The ZrO2 coating also prevented the adhesion and biofilm formation of S. aureus.
