Revisiting the theory behind AFM indentation procedures. Exploring the physical significance of fundamental equations

Stylianos-Vasileios Kontomaris et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the fundamental contact mechanics models used in atomic force microscopy (AFM) indentation methods, which involve the interaction between an axisymmetric indenter and an elastic half-space. A simplified 'equivalent' physical system is proposed to correlate basic magnitudes such as applied force, Young's modulus, contact radius, and indentation depth. The equations representing these relationships are derived using fundamental physics, providing a strong theoretical background for AFM indentation theory for students and non-specialists in contact mechanics.

A novel approximate method to calculate the force applied on an elastic half space by a rigid sphere

S. Kontomaris et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the calculation method of the applied force on an elastic half space when a rigid sphere is pushed towards it, under the condition that the deformation depth is significantly smaller compared to the sphere's radius. It also addresses the scenario when the deformation depth is larger and provides a relative discussion on the application of the results.

Nano-Scale Stiffness and Collagen Fibril Deterioration: Probing the Cornea Following Enzymatic Degradation Using Peakforce-QNM AFM

Ahmed Kazaili et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ultrastructure and nanomechanical properties of porcine cornea following incubation with alpha-amylase and collagenase. The research found that collagen fibril diameters were decreased following incubation with amylase, but elastic modulus, diameter, and D-periodicity were greatly reduced in collagenase-treated samples. The enzymatic treatment may help in understanding keratoconus and potentially developing an animal model for this eye disorder.

Modelling small and large displacements of a sphere on an elastic half-space exposed to a dynamic force

H. Koruk

Summary: An analytical model for predicting the dynamic behavior of spheres at medium interfaces has been developed, with an improved model developed through the comparison of mathematical and finite element models. The model, which considers elastic properties, sphere size, medium density, sphere mass, and radiation damping, is applicable to small and large sphere displacements. This model provides insight into the dynamic responses of spherical objects at medium interfaces and can be a valuable tool for students and researchers in engineering, materials science, and physics.
