HERFD-XANES and RIXS Study on the Electronic Structure of Trivalent Lanthanides across a Series of Isostructural Compounds

Pavel Zasimov et al.

Summary: In this study, we systematically investigated the complexes of trivalent lanthanide cations with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)-borato (Tp) ligand using high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) techniques. The results obtained were compared with calculations performed using density functional theory (DFT) and atomic multiplet theory. We discussed the observed spectral features, energy splitting trends, and possible origins of the patterns observed. This study provides valuable insight into the electronic structure of trivalent lanthanide compounds and is applicable to various research areas involving lanthanides.

Chemical Information in the L3 X-ray Absorption Spectra of Molybdenum Compounds by High-Energy-Resolution Detection and Density Functional Theory

Artem Svyazhin et al.

Summary: X-ray spectroscopy using high-energy-resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) provides detailed information on the oxidation state, phase composition, and local environment in molybdenum-based compounds at the L-3-edge. The chemical shift of HERFD L-3-edge spectra follows a parabolic dependence on the oxidation state, providing insights into the distortion of ligand environments and radial order of atoms around the absorber. The comparison of high-resolution spectra with theoretical simulations demonstrates the ability of the single-electron approximation to reproduce the spectral shape accurately, which can be useful in various fields including physics, chemistry, materials science, and biochemistry.

Operando HERFD-XANES and surface sensitive Δμ analyses identify the structural evolution of copper(II) phthalocyanine for electroreduction of CO2

Bingbao Mei et al.

Summary: Quantitatively understanding the impact of atomic-level catalyst structural changes on the reactivity of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction is challenging. Operando high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used in this study to identify the dynamic structural transformation of active sites of a model copper(II) phthalocyanine catalyst. The approach developed is a novel and powerful technique for elucidating complex catalytic mechanisms and may contribute to the rational design of highly effective catalysts.

The Application of HEXS and HERFD XANES for Accurate Structural Characterisation of Actinide Nanomaterials: The Case of ThO2

Lucia Amidani et al.

Summary: Through the combination of HEXS and HERFD XANES analysis, the short- and medium-range order of chemically precipitated ThO2 NPs has been characterized for the first time, providing new insights into the structures of NPs at different stages of formation. The pair distribution function revealed a high concentration of ThO2 small units mixed with ThO2 NPs in the initial steps of formation, and drying promoted the recrystallization of the smallest units into more thermodynamically stable ThO2 NPs.

Quantification of Ni-N-O Bond Angles and NO Activation by X-ray Emission Spectroscopy

Phan N. Phu et al.

Summary: X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) was used to study a series of beta-diketiminate Ni-NO complexes with various NO binding modes and oxidation states. The results showed that XES can distinguish end-on vs side-on NO coordination modes and differences in NO coordination angles of around 10 degrees. Additionally, the utility of XES for characterizing NO intermediates in metalloenzymes, such as Cu nitrite reductase (NiR), was demonstrated. This work highlights the capability of XES in quantifying small molecule activation in enzymes.

Advanced x-ray spectroscopy of actinide trichlorides

Sergei M. Butorin

Summary: The application of core-to-core resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption at actinide M-4,M-5 edges was analyzed for trivalent actinide compounds. The HERFD method was found to be highly sensitive in monitoring even small variations in the actinide chemical state, showing better agreement at the M-4 edges compared to the M-5 edges. The dependence of HERFD-XAS spectra on the actinide coordination number indicates significant sensitivity to the ligand structural arrangement around the actinide sites.

Effect of 3d/4p Mixing on 1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering: Electronic Structure of Oxo-Bridged Iron Dimers

Thomas Kroll et al.

Summary: 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (1s2p RIXS) has been successful in determining the differential orbital covalency (DOC) in highly covalent iron environments, but the presence of non-centrosymmetric environments with metal-oxo bonds introduces 4p character into 3d orbitals, impacting electronic structure analysis. This study examines the effects of 4p mixing on 1s2p RIXS spectra using binuclear oxo bridged Fe(III) complexes and elucidates the selective nature of the mixing for enhancing L-edge XAS analysis in terms of DOC. Additionally, the study provides structural insights from biferric model studies for peroxo bridged biferric enzyme intermediates.
