Discovery and characterization of a novel perylenephotoreductant for the activation of aryl halides

Min Li et al.

Summary: By rational design and structural manipulation, a novel organic perylenephotoreductant, hexacetyl reduced cercosporin (HARCP), with greatly improved photoreductive activity, fluorescence lifetime, and fluorescence quantum yield, was developed. HARCP efficiently realized various benchmark reactions under mild conditions, demonstrating the significance of structural manipulation in designing customized photocatalysts for photoredox chemistry.

Molecular insights into the endoperoxide formation by Fe(II)/α-KG-dependent oxygenase NvfI

Takahiro Mori et al.

Summary: Endoperoxide-containing natural products are a group of compounds with unique cyclized peroxide moieties, but the biosynthesis of these compounds remains unclear. Researchers analyzed the structural and functional characteristics of the endoperoxidase NvfI from Aspergillus novofumigatus IBT 16806, which catalyzes the formation of fumigatonoid A without utilizing a tyrosyl radical in the reaction.

A quantum chemical approach for the mechanisms of redox-active metalloenzymes

Per E. M. Siegbahn

Summary: Quantum chemistry has become a significant part in investigating redox-active enzymes, with hybrid density functional theory as the leading electronic structure tool. The choice of 15% for the fraction of exact exchange in the functional has been found to work best, and varying it within a reasonable range helps study the relative energy dependence. The method's development and application have led to results in excellent agreement with experiments, as well as numerous new predictions.
