Similar Holocene glaciation histories in tropical South America and Africa

Anthony C. Vickers et al.

Summary: This study presents reconstructions of glacier extents from Peru and Uganda, showing that glaciers were generally smaller than today during the Holocene and larger than today for most of the past several millennia. The similar glacier history in South America and Africa suggests that large-scale warming followed by cooling in the tropics primarily drove ice extent, rather than changes in precipitation. The results also imply that recent tropical ice retreat is anomalous in a multimillennial context.

Millennial-scale deglaciation across the European Alps at the transition between the Younger Dryas and the Early Holocene - evidence from a new cosmogenic nuclide chronology

Marie Protin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the timing of glacier fluctuations in the European Alps during the Younger Dryas/Early Holocene (YD/EH) transition. The findings suggest broadly synchronous behavior of glaciers across the Alps between 12 and 10 ka, indicating that common regional climate conditions had a major impact on Alpine glacier variations during this period. Additionally, similarities in glacier behavior and temperature records between the Alpine region and northern high latitudes suggest a teleconnection, with pronounced changes in seasonality between the Younger Dryas and the Early Holocene.

The Zealandia Switch: Ice age climate shifts viewed from Southern Hemisphere moraines

George H. Denton et al.

Summary: The study addresses two fundamental questions about the ice-age climate system from a Southern Hemisphere perspective, with a focus on the last glacial termination and its climate elements. By studying mountain glaciers in the Southern Alps and southern Andes, researchers revealed possible causes and characteristics of the last glacial termination. The findings suggest a global warming episode during the last ice age, with a hypothesis involving a shift in Southern Ocean circulation and austral westerly wind system.
