Evaluation of Microvascular and Visual Acuity Changes in Patients with Early Diabetic Retinopathy: Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Study

Mohamed Attia Ali Ahmed et al.

Summary: OCTA can detect early microvascular changes in patients with mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, which are correlated with visual acuity and FAZ parameters. This can help in detecting early disease progression and modifying treatment decisions.

Optical coherence tomography angiography in diabetic retinopathy: an updated review

Zihan Sun et al.

Summary: OCTA technology allows for quantification of microvascular changes in diabetic retinopathy, including classic features and early microvascular abnormalities, making it a promising objective tool for early detection, staging, and progression of DR, ultimately leading to improved individualized management and prevention of visual impairment.

Management of Patients with Newly Diagnosed Diabetic Mellitus: Ophthalmologic Outcomes in Intensive versus Conventional Glycemic Control

Pun Yuet Lam et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of intensive versus conventional glycemic control in T1DM and T2DM patients with diabetic retinopathy. Intensive glycemic control was found to reduce the development of severe diabetic retinopathy, although early worsening commonly occurred during the first year of treatment, with most patients recovering and having better long-term ophthalmologic outcomes compared to conventional control.

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy is associated with reduced retinopathy progression compared with multiple daily injections of insulin

Laura J. Reid et al.

Summary: This study compared the progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 1 diabetes who received CSII therapy versus MDI therapy. The results showed that CSII therapy was associated with reduced progression of diabetic retinopathy compared to continued MDI therapy, especially for patients with high baseline HbA(1c). The progression of retinopathy over 3 years was not affected by changes in HbA(1c).

Associations Between Diabetic Retinal Microvasculopathy and Neuronal Degeneration Assessed by Swept-Source OCT and OCT Angiography

Bingjie Qiu et al.

Summary: This study provides clinical evidence of the associations between retinal neuronal degeneration and microvasculopathy in diabetic retinopathy (DR). The results show that certain parameters such as retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, foveal avascular zone area, and vessel density are strong predictors of DR severity. Ganglion cell loss is correlated with changes in foveal avascular zone parameters and vessel density in DR.

Quantitative analysis of retinal vessel density and thickness changes in diabetes mellitus evaluated using optical coherence tomography angiography: a cross-sectional study

Xinyue Li et al.

Summary: Diabetic patients show decreased retinal vessel density, thickening of the neurosensory retina, and thinning of the retinal pigment epithelium compared to controls, indicating ischemia of the retinal capillaries and morphologic changes in vivo prior to vision loss. OCTA may be a useful quantitative method for early detection of diabetic retinopathy.
