Galectin-3 regulates microglial activation and promotes inflammation through TLR4/MyD88/NF-kB in experimental autoimmune uveitis

Yusen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect and mechanism of Galectin-3 on microglial activation and inflammation in autoimmune uveitis. The results showed that the expression of Galectin-3 was increased in microglia of uveitis retinas. Inhibition of Galectin-3 improved the clinical and pathological manifestations of uveitis and reduced the expression of proinflammatory factors. The mechanism involved down-regulation of TLR4 and MyD88 expression and inhibition of NF-kappa B p65 activation in microglia.

Microglial phagocytosis of neurons in neurodegeneration, and its regulation

Claire A. Butler et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that excessive microglial phagocytosis of live neurons and synapses contributes to neurodegeneration in animal models of various brain diseases. Factors regulating microglial phagocytosis of neurons could be potential treatment targets to prevent neurodegeneration induced by excessive microglial phagocytosis of live neurons and synapses.

Novel Galectin-3 Roles in Neurogenesis, Inflammation and Neurological Diseases

Luana C. Soares et al.

Summary: Galectin-3 is a multifunctional protein that drives inflammation in disease, exacerbating conditions like Alzheimer's. It regulates various pathways, including bone morphogenetic protein signaling and Wnt signaling, and plays a role in both pathology and the regulation of neurogenesis in the healthy brain. It can be targeted pharmacologically and has potential therapeutic implications for diseases involving brain inflammation.

Diurnal Photoreceptor Outer Segment Renewal in Mice Is Independent of Galectin-3

Nicholas J. Esposito et al.

Summary: The study shows that Gal-3 does not play a essential role in the outer segment renewal in mice. Results indicate that lgals3(-/-) mice exhibit similar diurnal phagocytosis activity compared to wt mice, and recombinant Gal-3 does not promote engulfment of POS by RPE cells.
